Good morning, Our washer (Maytag Performa, Model PAV2300AWW) was working fine until it started spinning before the first rinse cycle. It became very noisy. Redistributing the load several times did not help. I held the lid up and by-passed the interlock to verify that the tub was spinning, which it was. Also, when the tub is spinning and the lid is opened there is a noticeable squeal as the break is applied. I don't remember hearing the squealing sound before. I ran the washer without clothes (between the wash and rinse cycle) and the noise was not as noticeable, the squeal was still there when stopping and the tub appeared to be tilted slightly toward the right. I took the front off of the washer and noticed the motor would pivot and if I pushed the motor into a certain position and held it, it would work better. I was able to wash two small loads of clothes this way. On my third attempt the noise was back and the agitation was barely working. The spin cycle was much slower. It also appeared that the motor was getting hot as I could smell the varnish burning on the field windings. Then, the washer just stopped. I'd appreciate any help you can give me on what my next steps should be.
Thank you, Bill
The belt may be old and stretched/slipping...if it is stretched and slipping it will cause the squealing .............otherwise, check the pulley for the belt/motor to see if it is okay and the motor itself copuld be worn out if the belt looks ok............be careful, you can get zapped if you touch a wire and also if the motor is burned up it can cause a fire so watch carefully and you should be able to see which of these possibilities are the problem..............
