My Father tried to clean the snow chute out on our Ariens snowblower with the engine running, the impeller apparently had a load on it and smacked into the cleaning tool and broke it. Since then, the impeller and auger have been rotating very slowly and not moving snow, I assume this is a saftey feature of some sort. Is there any way to repair it at home, or should we take it to a professional?
Sorry for posting this in the riding mower category, there isn't a catergory of snowblowers as far as I can see.
Sounds like you have a broken or partially broken shear pin in the auger.Check along the auger[machine off]and see if there is what looks like a bolt anywhere along the auger shaft. If there is [and there will be] remove and inspect it and you will see why the auger is not working.Next time, never clean out a chute or auger while the engine is running, people loose limbs this way.
