Purchased WD 500g hard drive less than two months ago. Drive is used almost exclusively for 'Pro-Tools' recording. Drive is full of musical recordings and demo tracks. 16 cds just to install the software. I was flipping pictures from landscape to portrait and the drive froze. Put in my other identical machine. Still NG. I can take it to Best Buy and have them image a new one... which I have already purchased... same exact drive; or do it myself. I would prefer to send it back to WD and have them do it. Perhaps they can capture the data; which is really what I want. Do start all over again represents hours and hours of loading and configuring. Does Western Digital perform this service. I am willing to pay of course. Please help me out. This one is a disaster for me even though the data is backed up.
You can use is as a slave drive on another computer so you can check if you can recover your data. you can also use 3rd party software that can recover data from a non working HDD

Hi Regin, I used to have a WD drive and one day I started having all sorts of formatting issues. The WD was very sensitive and then a week or so later, it started making clicking noises, and then a day later it died. I returned it and got a new WD but in less than 8 months, I lost all my data again! I never bothered asking WD for a new one, and used it as a door stopper for a year or more! Eventually, I threw it away about a year ago. I recently read that someone whose WD drive crashed threw it in the freezer and left it there for a couple days and then it was fine!!! I am telling you the truth, i read that here on FixYa! In any case, be care, be tender. Dont think that just because you have a back up drive that you are protected! My experience suggests that there is something wrong with a number of WD drives! We should all get our money bacK! I would use another kind of back up system, personally.
IF IT IS LESS THAN 30 DAYS OLD , W/D HAS FREE SUPPORT. OR OPTION B GO TO CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT, WAIT A FEW SECONDS, THEN ENLARGE THE PAGE. LOOK FOR YOUR DRIVE. THEN LOOK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE UNALLOCATED SPACE. IN ANY EVENT, RIGHT CLICK THE DRIVE, SEE THE OPTIONS THAT ARE AVAILABLE, MIGHT WANT TO MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE. .....HOPE THIS HELPS........JEFFXC.......... IF PURCHASED @ WALMART, THEY WILL TAKE ANYTHING BACK!
If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If
you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay
our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer,
then it is under warranty.
A replacement or extra power supply for your external drive can be purchased from our phone support team by calling 1-800-275-4932. Any technical support representative
will be able to sell this part. Please have the serial number or model
number of the hard drive ready, as this is needed to determine the
correct adaptor type for the hard drive.
USB s slow and when you have huge files it tends to bog it down. it is better to have a firewire transfer. another reason could be your computer is doing to much. leave the computer at one task. walk away and let it work. otherwise you will be using memory.
Any hard drive once away from an enclosure, becomes just another hard drive to use as you see fit. You'll just have to access it through control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disc management. From there you can reformat, etc.
i suspect ,if there was no bad sounds on the drive when it was wrking ,that it must be the circut board on back of drive . i ,m in the same boat myself & i,m trying to track down same type of c/board.i do not think this is mechanical bit, electrictal
