There are two types of Kenmore top loading washing machines. The direct drive models and the belt drive models. Direct drive models do not have a back access panel and the water inlet valve is located on the left side viewed from the rear while belt drive models do have back access panel and the water inlet valve is located on the right side viewed from the rear.

The most common problem causing a top loading machine not to agitate, particularly when the motor seems running, is a broken motor coupler for direct drive models and a broken or worn out drive belt for belt drive models.

The best way to exactly determine the cause is to access the drive motor. Open the back access panel for belt drive models and check the drive belt. Check the drive motor if it is running, humming or stuck.

Please indicate the model number of the washing machine if it is a direct drive model for the procedure in accessing drive motor.

The symptoms you describe are often caused by a lid switch malfunction. It may be loose or not making good contact. If you open and close the lid, you should hear a "clicking" sound as the lid switch is activated. If you do not hear the switch, check to make sure the lid strike in still intact. This is a small plastic piece mounted on the lid that pushes down on the switch through a slot on the wash tub opening on the right hand side. If this piece breaks off, it will give the same symptoms of a broken lid switch. Next, check the two mounting screws on the right side of the wash tub opening to make sure they are tight. These are the mounting screws for the lid switch. Sometimes they come loose and the switch does not make proper contact. If you attempt all these preliminaries, and the switch still does not seem to be working properly, replace it. A replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the part will be located under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. For instructions on how to replace a lid switch, click on the following link:

SOURCE: removing agitator

Sometimes small articles of clothing can manage to get between the inner spin basket and outer wash tub. This is NOT common, however. If this were the case the memory stick you mentioned, would end up lodged in the drain pump. There would be a noticeable noise from the impeller hitting it and it may cause the pump to fail, resulting in drainage problems. More than likely, its right where you suspect it is. To remove the agitator, do the following:

1. Remove the center cap or dispenser from the agitator.
2. Under the cap or dispenser is another plastic cap with a pull handle on it. Lift this cap out by pulling straight up, exposing the agitator mounting bolt.
3. Loosen the agitator bolt using a socket and ratchet. Once removed, grasp the entire agitator assembly by the bottom flanges and lift straight up. The entire agitator should come out.

NOTE: When reinstalling the agitator make sure you DO NOT overtighten the mounting bolt or it can cause damage to the agitator and restrict the movement. Good and "snug" is the rule of thumb.

Searspartsdirect.com has an excellent exploded view diagram of your agitator and components if you need a good reference. Just type in your COMPLETE model number and look under the "Agitator, Basket and Tub Parts" heading.

I hope you find what you're looking for and hope this helps you in some way. If you require additional assistance, please let me know.

SOURCE: Clothing stuck on agitator with top loading washing machine

Dear Whitworth,

The agitator's movement back and forth is important for the cleaning of your laundry. If it doesn't function properly, your clothes won't be as clean as possible. If your agitator does not move, moves only in one direction or its movement is very weak, you will probably need to remove the agitator. Furthermore, in order to inspect the tub for leaks, the clutch assembly, the splines, or to remove the spin drum, you will have to remove the agitator.

The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.
Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to do some combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.
Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytags may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.
If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

On some you won’t see a bolt but if you look at it the white plastic that looks to have a stud in the middle is square and that is the nut you can use a 1/2" extension and ratchet to unscrew it then remove then agitator
