Nice old style machine. I think the motor has a two speed control on those. Low speed does wash and high speed does spin. There is some help in this link.
possible the belt had stretched and the pulley was turning but the belt wasnt moving causing it to get hot and break
make sure the electric motor is turning and also the pulley that turns the wash tub, fit the new belt and make sure you tension the belt or it will slip again and ruin the new belt
If the washer is stopped mid cycle it will default to rinse and spin. It will then get stuck in a loop. It is necessary to reset the electronics. Unplug the electrical cord from the unit. Wait 30 seconds. Turn the cycle selector all the way around clockwise. Turn it again and set it on any setting accept rinse or spin. Plug the unit in. It should begin a new cycle and be working normally.
