I assume you are attempting a "downgrade" to Xp from Vista, since this laptop does not come with XP.
From the Compaq information page:

  1. HP does NOT support XP for consumer notebooks, so if you have any difficulties regarding XP, do not expect HP will help you.
  2. HP may demand you to install back VISTA if you have hardware problem to troubleshoot it.
    An option to consider-put your original Vista hdd away and install new one for XP.
  3. Some of the notebook features may not work in XP due to uncertified licenses pointed in this guide.
  4. Microsoft has released three (3) Service Packs for XP, use only SP2 for the first trial. Why? Since many of XP drivers are released based on XP-SP2.
  5. Always make Vista Recovery cd/dvd before downgrade to XP. see it here
  6. You have a folder with drivers & programs that may prove very helpful after XP downgrade.
    Copy folder C:\Swsetup to DVD Before formatting your hdd.
  7. If you have a pre-SP2 XP cd, get the full SP to Integrate with Nlite: SP2 Nlite HERE
The help guide for downgrading is here. There is a lot of information on this process written there.

However, if what you want is a an XP look and feel so you can compute the way you used to, change the Vista to look like XP in the display properties.
If you are trying to run non-Vista software, try running it in compatibility mode. To do this, right click on the program files and select properties and then locate compatibility..

When i am installing windows xp3 in compaq presario cq40-301tu there displayed blue screen error....do u know the solution to get out of this error & continuing the installstions??

A) Installing same version of Windows, or a lesser version;

Enter BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options, set the first boot device to CDROM.

{Windows doesn't like being copied over by the same version, or a lesser version.
The above will make the computer boot up from the Windows XP sp3 disk you have}

B) If your computer came with a version of Win Vista, and you are trying to install WinXP over it, reply in a Comment.

How to install xp

  1. Place the Windows XP installation disk in your Compaq Presario notebook's CD or DVD drive, and restart the computer. Press any key on your keyboard when prompted.
  2. Press the "Enter" button on your keyboard when you are brought to the "Welcome to Setup" window. Read the XP license terms and tap the "F8" key to verify that you have read and agree to them.
  3. Select the hard disk drive on which you wish to install the Windows XP operating system. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to toggle between options.
  4. Press the "Enter" key after highlighting the location where you would like to install XP. Windows XP will begin copying installation files to your computer. XP will restart your computer automatically upon finishing.
  5. Select the region you reside in and your primary language in the window that appears after your computer restarts. Type in your name and the organization your computer is affiliated with (if any).
  6. Enter the 25-character product key that was included with the Windows XP installation CD. Click the "Next" button to continue. Type in a name for the computer and a password for the administrative account.
  7. Choose your time, time zone, and the correct date in the following window, and click "Next" to continue. Select "Typical settings" on the "Network Settings" screen and hit the "Next" button.
  8. Enter a workgroup name if your Compaq Presario CQ50 notebook PC is a part of a connected network of computers (such as at an office), and click "Next" to proceed. Compaq CQ40-108TU unable to install XP OS

Prepare a Bootable XP Disc installer.
At first go to BIOS Setup to Boot First Priority the CD/DVD Rom Drive.
After that disabled SATA or RAID Configuration. The Bootable XP Disc Installer could not go on when you don't disable the SATA or RAID Connection.
Don't worry that you are thinking it would not detected the SATA HDD by Bootable Disc but it is. Then follow the instruction.
Good luck!

If i am helpful to you please rate me.
Thank you.

Compaq presario cq45 112AU unable to install winxp

U need to edit the BIOS settings because SATA drivers is not included inside older Window XP CD.
Disable the SATA option under advance options in BIOS. That should work and it will also allow you to install/reinstall Win XP.
