The mp4's could be contributing to the problem. It's the compression you are seeing. It's the same when my Tivo is playing. It's compressed video. It just makes it seem worse when the screen is dark.
I get this too with my Samsung. Are you watching HD content or standard (cable, satellite) tv? If it's the latter, that's why. The lack of quality really shows on analog signals. The shows that I Tivo look horrible a lot of times. Another thing is the connection to the television. If you are using standard RCA connectors, try switching to either component or HDMI.

well i notice it the most when watching video on my ps3. i have alot of mp4 video loaded on it.picture is awesome until dark scenes come along.i am using hdmi for connection. i tweaked some picture settings and it helped a little.
yea i was kinda starting to think that might be the problem. would you recommend adjusting any picture settings to help it in any way?
I have this same problem when watching blue ray movies on the PS3 and I am using the expensive HDMI cables. I have tried adjusting all the picture settings and nothing makes it look and better. Any ideas?
