Anyone know where the lid switch is located on a compaq v5000 laptop. My display keeps going blank and if I close and then open the lid it flickers back into life before going off again. Any help greatly appreciated....
Compaq V5000 backlight is out. I can see the logo during POST and Windows boots, I can see the Welcome Screen.
I've hooked up external VGA, it works just fine. I've swapped 3 LCD panels that are known good and 3 inverters known to be good. Same problem on all of them. I cannot find any information on the switch, whether or not it's magnetic, etc.
I'm stumped.
HP DV 5000 LID switch location is here:
If You want test lid switch, just connect A+B together for a monent!
If the monitor flashes on...? Lid switch is faulty.
It is too dificult to change the lid switch, so the easiest way is connect these pins together forever. :))
Dont forget to turn off your notebook... he wont sleep anymore ;))

Hi, I have a hp pavilion dv2000 one day just the backligth of LCD dont work. First I think in a inverter problem, later an lamp problem. But after some days I did find many people have the same problem with this model (dv2000); and 90% the problem was a fail in LID switch (magnetic detection) to know if the LCD is open or closed. So the main board think the LCD is closed and for save energy keep turned off the LCD backligth. In my laptop the problem can be workaround by disconecting the lid switch . I think the V5000 series have one LID1 connector like the DV2000 series. You can get more info in the next link

Good luck. I hope this info will be usefull for you.
I think it is the power converter somewhere in/on the mainboard, ore close to it, you have a converter from 12 to maybe about 100V ac or dc, this converter seems to me is being to old, and it is probably a capacitor in that circuit there is dry. you need to have a diagram and positions drawing to start soldering this problem.

Hi...
I have an hp pavilion dv2000 and with a similar problem. The lid switch fail and the laptop 'think' or 'guess' the LCD is closed. So the main board send an signal to the inverter to turn off the LCD backligth to save energy. In this model (dv2000) the touchpad and the multimedia buttons going to 'sleep' too when the laptop 'think' the LCD is closed over the keyboard. After read about many people have the same problem with this series of laptop, I did find the solution. I think other models from hp like V5000 must have too one connector labeled LID1. In my Laptop the problem can be workaround just by disconnect the lid switch, a little 2 pin connector under the keyboard (around the center). There are 3 conectors in this area, the LCD1 connector (with many pins), the LID1 connector (with 2 pins), and the CAP1 connector. You can get more info from this link...

good luck.
Check you monitor power options settings under the display / screen saver. you can change the way the display behaves. BPCS

Thanks, I've already tried that. I think I should have probably worded that better. After reading your comment, and rereading my post, I see how you interpreted that.
When I say I can see the logo, etc, I didn't mean to imply that the backlight works until the Welcome Screen. What I meant was, the backlight is out, all the time...yet I know the LCD panel and the video card work because I see text on the screen, etc. This is a hardware problem, no doubt. For whatever reason, I can't get the backlight to turn on, and I've swapped out the usual suspects and tried to adjust the brightness with the FN keys. I'm using a parts mule DV5000 (an HP), so I know the parts work. I've done cross references on the inverters, and they are the same. The LCD panels are identical between them. Yet I get no backlight. I've hooked it to an external monitor, so it's fine through that output.
If it's not a switch stuck somewhere, I think it's a motherboard issue. I worked on some Dell laptops that had magnetic switches to tell the computer when the lid was closed. I don't see anything like that, so I'm trying to figure out how this thing knows the lid is closed so I can test to see whether or not that is what the problem is. I'm thinking the switch is going to be on the bottom of the latch in the base of the laptop, under the touch pad, on the board. I was hoping it wasn't going to be there. It's probably not something you can easily fix, either. I was just wanting some confirmation before I start ripping that thing apart all over my bench.
I have the same problem w/ a DV5000 and a V6000, The DV2000 as said earlier have a total different switch set up under the hinge easy replacement.
