Refrigerator won't stay cold. first the entire refrigerator/freezer thawed. i called out repair, they replaced the defrost timer. the r/f got so cold it froze everything solid. repairman came out again, replaced the thermostat. r/f got a little cold, then everything thawed again, ruined all the food. repairman came out 3rd time, re-replaced defrost timer. worked for 2 days, then everything thawed again. today (2 days after big thaw) i turned the coldness indicators all the way to the right (coldest), and it has been working, but all my stuff is still in coolers. the r/f was mfg 12/99, it shouldn't be broken yet. the repairman says maybe it's the compressor, but no way i'm repairing that. i've spent $400 already trying to fix this thing.
With the defrost timer being replaced already it sounds as if the repairman is not looking at the real problem. Unit works for 2 days then things start thawing. Hint Hint... it is not defrosting. There is a heating element inside the freezer section attached underneath the internal tubing that melts the ice every 6 to 8 hours via the defrost timer depending on the defrost timer installed. To prove that it is not defrosting..... just unplug the unit and place a stand fan blowing into the freezer for about 90 minutes. I would bet that once you plug it back in it wil work for 2 days and the problem once again repeats. With 2 calls on the same unit and you still have the same problem I would be calling the service people back and demand they fully troubleshoot the defrosting element and thermostat. Personally this is an unstatisfactory performance of an in home service by a repairman. With the exception of a new part if required, they should wave any labor and service call fees.
Testimonial: "Thanks! The repairman also replaced the thermostat, though. What should I ask him to do this time? Replacements were: timer, thermo, timer."
I know this sounds sarcastic but I would simply ask him to fix it. I mentioned the defroting heating element in my last post. It is time for some multi-meter use checking for continuity point to point in the defrost circuit. A good tech would have done this when the supposedly need came for a 2 nd defrost timer to be installed. The only things in the circuit that have not been checked the are wires for power and grounds along with the defrost heating element.
Again as I said in my first reply: Personally this is an unstatisfactory performance of an in home service by a repairman. With the exception of any new part if required, they should wave any labor and service call fees.

What is the model number of your unit?
Hi
Check the freezer to ensure it isn't over loaded with food stuff; reason being air must flow freely threw out the entire refrigerator in order for the thermostat to work correctly. Also check whether the unit needs defrosting or not. You should also check the coils on the rear of the refrigerator and make sure they are clean and dust free. If you still have problems after trying the above; you may need to call a repair service to come out and check the unit
