I have a Brother HL-5370DW. I changed the encryption to AES and that allowed it to connect with WPA2-PSK
I will say i am above average in computer knowledge, i have setup many different issues with computers, but this was had me stumped. I have a BROTHER MFC-7840W win xp prof and i have to say calling BROTHER customer service was awesome.
For 2Wire users, at first I was very skeptical because of issues i was having, but once understand how works, kinda nice not having all those extra boxes and wires from modem and routers. Anyway, the key to getting this to work is to go out to the router, wireless and mac address open that up and uncheck the box enable. All 2wire manufacture's at least AT&T should have a further notation that all manual and WIRELESS additions of mac address must have box unchecked. Once i unchecked, honestly within 2 seconds printer was set up.
I've got the same issue, but with a Linksys WRT54GL running dd-wrt. Haven't found a fix yet, but if I do, I'll come back to post it ...
Aha !!! Solved it.
There is a bug in the printer's wireless software.
My router was set up to use WPA2 encryption. Four attempts to get the MFC-7840w to connect all failed.
I downgraded the router's security to WPA encryption. The MFC-7840 connected first time without a hitch.
This is, of course, a security risk. WPA is not as secure as WPA2. So I've sent an email to Brother; who knows whether they'll respond.
But the printer's now working happily. As noted in my first comment, my router's a WRT54GL running DD-WRT (THE way to go w/ a router, by the way; that 2Wire thing, usually foisted on folks by the PhoneCo, is a piece of ****). But I'm thinking my fix will work for you as well.

Now i will say that I am above average in computer knowledge, have set up, redone, etc many aspects of a computer, but this issue kept me stumped for 2 days and BROTHER was awesome. I have a Brother MFC-7840W machine, win xp prof.
For all those 2wire people, actually brother was very helpful. There is no fault in their technology as far as security goes, and the 2wire believe me, at first i was skeptical, but once understand how to use, works great. The secret to adding a wireless connectiion for 2wire is to go to router settings, go to mac address and take off enable. Actually 2wire manufacturer, at least AT
