oil leaking is a good indication not to use the transmission

There is no way to fix the oil leak except to replace the transmission. They use a sealed unit.Sorry for the bad news.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washer.

The part you need is probably the 3349985 Seal, Gearcase
Cover, a relatively cheap part.

I've found that basic 80-90 weight non-detergent gear oil ( available at auto parts stores) seems to work well. It's certainly less expensive than the gearcase oil from Sears.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

It's quite possible that the cover plate on the transmission is leaking.

Pulling the transmission and taking the cover off is a bit of a messy jobv but not too difficult. It holds about 15 oz. of 80-90 weight gear oil.

You don't have to remove the tub to pull the transmission.

Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft), remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 14 - 15Oz of oil

If the top of the case is leaking, you might try a gasket / sealer available at most auto repair / parts shops.

While you have the top off of the transmission, you might also want to check the condition of the plastic parts in the transmission itself.

LEAKING:

See the Sears site sub-components for the agitator, basket and tub. It's possible that one of the gaskets or seals has worn over time.

I'd also pull off the cabinet and check the hoses leading to and from the pump. It's also possible that the pump is leaking.

OIL

The black oil / fluid that you see is likely coming from the transmission.

Since it seems to be "spraying" around the inside of the cabinet, I'd assume that it is leaking from the top seal between the transmission and clutch.

If you look at page 15, you'll see a Seal, Gearcase Cover. It is possible that that is the cause of your transmission leak.

The rust on the bottom of the transmission may (hopefully) be simply caused by the water leak.

I'd remove the gearcase cover (8 bolts) in order to check the gearcase cover seal, and to check the oil level. The Whirlpool transmission takes about 15oz or 80-90 weight oil.

The problem is likely either the transmission cover or the gearcase cover seal or the spin pinion seal.

When you pull the transmission, you should be able to tell where it is leaking.

In order to pull off the cover, pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft, remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 16Oz of oil
