If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.

If not they will sell you another one.

A replacement or extra power supply for your external drive can be purchased from our phone support team by calling 1-800-275-4932. Any technical support representative will be able to sell this part. Please have the serial number or model number of the hard drive ready, as this is needed to determine the correct adaptor type for the hard drive.

I hope this helps,

WHAT IS THE INPUT VOLTAGE AND AMPS OF A 500 GB WD EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. I LOST MY ADAPTER

You can normally buy a replacement adapter from Western Digital from this link, but they are out of stock at the moment.

As an alternative place to purchase this, it looks like you can buy it on Amazon.com

Check the label affixed on the unit. It should indicate the power requirements. If not, go to the Western Digital website and locate the specifications for this particular model.

My 'Elements' WD 500G external hard drive is no longer powering up - it has an external separate power supply (it isn't one that powers via USB only). The power supply 'box' is flashing a green light. Do I...

If it is a matter of just the power supply failing, you can get a replacement. It is possible to remove the HD and place it in a new case with a new power supply, as well. However, if you suddenly smell something burning after that, you are on the trail to adventure. That might be a burnt out diode, easy enough for a PC repair shop to replace. Or, it might be something more serious and you would need an expensive data recover shop to get back your loss. You could call Western Digital customer service and see what they have to offer in terms of a power supply or make use of the following link:

My power supply does not seem to be working.

You need the part number off the drive and contact western digital to get a replacement power supply if it is not in warranty.

WD ELEMENTS 1TB and the power supply is blinking

You have a bad power supply. You can probably get a new adapter for it.

Is wd5000e035 five pronged adaptor exclusive to manufacturer?

It is the best place to get it. You can get it online at different places, But you will not be 100% sure if you have the right one.
It any of the five prongs are the wrong voltage it will kill you chances of getting it working again. It is a common problem for the power supply to go out with these WD Elements drive. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.
