I have an Armstrong Astro 25BS recirculating pump that has quit working. It is about 5 years old. There is some kind of capacitor or something connected in the box. Is there a way to tell if the pump itself is bad?

Hi,
The most common problem with these circulators is that the stator gets stuck and does not turn.
Sometimes you can take out the four bolts on the corners and pull the motor off. Get the stator freed up again and it will work. Make sure to turn the water off before dissassembling the pump. Hopefully you have valves do you can isolate the pump.
Also check that the impeller has not broken off the end of the shaft, that also happens sometimes.
You can check the cap. with an OHM meter by switching the terminals with the test leads and the resistance should count down to zero with each switch of the leads on the terminals...if not it is bad, but replacement of the cap. may not fix the pump usually it is a secondary failure...
If you can't get the pump ot work after taking it apart and making sure it turns freely then I would replace the pump.

What capacitor is in armstrong model scu10e42a-1a central air conditioner. It is please indicate farrad and voltage. Thanks

I never know what size capacitor until I pull it off and read the lavel.
Compressor or motor capacitor, both compressor and motor dual capacitor, there's different kinds.
After testing the capacitor and determining it does not hold charge, replace it and if it is a dual capacitor with one side bad, I end up rewiring for having two individual capacitors, keeping the old dual capacitor for its good side that still works and for future ease of repairs.
You did not specify which capacitor, it could be a 5 or a 25uf, dpending if its for fan or compressor motor and 370 or 440 volts. pull it off and find out. Take pictures before removing and mark the wires and terminals so it can be put back together as original.

I have a Amrstrong Astro 25B050S recirculating pump on my 50 gallon State water heater (both installed in 2006). The timer works fine and the I can hear the Astro pump and the pump feels very hot to the...

If the pump is very hot, unplug it.
Heat damages motor coil and indicates that pump is not rotating at correct speed, or not rotating.
Take apart and clean inside pipe with white vinegar or CLR to see if pump rotor can be freed to rotate.
If pump does not rotate after cleaning, then replace pump.

Hot water still takes two min. to go 50 feet . also is causing pipes to rattle. how is timer set?

It sounds like you have a 'crossover' problem.
Crossover means that cold water is getting into cold water pipe, and stopping hot water from flowing directly down the pipe.
This can signal a bad recirculation check valve, or a bad single-handled faucet cartridge.
Read how to test for crossover:

How to wire to 120v and thermostat on a armstrong astro 30 pump

A line voltage thermostat is just like any other type of switch, except that it's controlled by temperature.

Just wire the 120vac to the pump, but interrupt the hot (black) wire with the thermostat.

Let me know if you need more help.

3 speed Recirculation pump lost middle speed

It sounds like you might have had a power surge and burnt the windings on the medium speed. If it is bothersome, you will need to replace either the motor or the whole pump. (not sure if replacing just the motor is an option.)
