Our satellite dvr recorder is having issues. When we try to watch programs we've recorded they skip, break up into squares, the sound stops and then the picture reverts back to whater\ver is playing on the channel we happened to be on. The other night we recording a show and trying to watch a DVR recorded show but it kept acking like avd that skiped, returned us to regular prgramming and shut off the active recording.
The unit is about a year old. It skips, freezes, pizilates, and reverts back to what ever channel the unit was set at before trying to watch a recordeed program. Not very impressed this R15. Was told by Directv to have dish realigned. Did that, still the same. The unit is about a year old. I had this skipping/freezing problem with my R15 after about 1 year of use. Support told me that the hard drives get muddled up over time just like a PC does, and they had me do some resets. It took a couple of weeks working with DirecTV doing a soft-reset (reset button), warm-reset ("reset all" through menu, all recordings deleted) and a hard-reset (a series of button-pushing on the front of unit, completely reconfigured the hard drive). None of these solutions worked for more than a day, though of course it never skipped while I was on the phone with support. Finally they replaced my DVR for free with an R16 (I have the insurance). It is starting to get a little bit skippy now after just 3 months. I'm trying to proactively soft- and warm-reset it every once in a while hoping to prevent its inevitable decline. I'm into a week with a replacement DirecTV DVR and it began skipping immediately. One of the first things which ocurred during Activation is a massive software download (it took long enough for me to leave for more productive activities). DirecTV does not show the software Version Year, so I am not sure how many years old the coding is, but it does say September. They let me keep the old DVR and, as a retired IT/EE, I have removed the hard drive in an attempt to recover my recordings. My current educated guess is that the skipping, and other problems, are due to the software. Anyway, everyone complain to DirecTV and they will start paying attention.I'm into a week with a replacement DirecTV DVR and it began skipping immediately. 10-18-12: About a week ago DirecTV admitted this is a software issue they are working on, but have no fix date, nor will they notify anyone. Look at your software's Version Date to change and hope that does it.10-18-12: About a week ago DirecTV admitted this is a software issue they are working on, but have no fix date, nor will they notify anyone. Hey there, willrobwhitt, I saw your post! How long has this been going on for? Does it happen while you're watching live programming or just DVR recordings? Let me know so I can get a good understanding of the situation!
If it is only during watching a recording on the DVR then it may be the DVR that is the problem. Does a recording always break up at the same point? If so then the recording itself is bad and this may be due to a poor signal being received. If the breakup occurs randomly then the DVR may not be able to read the data from the recording media (Hard disk or DVD - you did not specify). The obvious first step is to try the DVR on another TV.
You can try this: Connect your DirecTv to VCR with Red/White/Yellow cables. Then the VCR to your TV with the same type of cables. Make sure the VCR is set to the video input, not the tuner. Turn your TV to the correct video input. Get the program ready on the DVR as if you were going to watch it. Press record on the VCR and then play on the DVR. At the end of the program, press stop on both. You may have a problem with the video recording properly. Some stations broadcast with copyright protection.
In this type of situation the solution would be to complete what is called a Front Panel Reset, this can be completed by completely unpluggin the receivers power cord from the wall and leaving unplugged for 10 seconds and then plug back in- but do NOT power your receiver back on. The receiver will complete a reset process which may take up to 5 minutes, during this time the receiver will power back on by itself and go through the necessary screens, once the receiver finishes downloading the program guide you will be able to verify if the DVR issues are resolved. If this problem happens repeatedly or has already happened repeatedly, please contact me directly so I can assist you and we can rectify the DVR issue with another option. If the issue has not been resolved already or you are still experiencing please e-mail me at [email protected]. I hope this helps you! -Kirstie DISH Network
if the show that you are recording is also skipping on live tv, then it could be 2 things. it could either be a broadcasting issue (which the broadcasting center at dish network would have to correct on their end) or 2. it could be that your dish needs realigned. also if you purchased the dish dvr through dish network their models are quite often refurbished where they fix old models and send them back out. (most satellite companies do this) contact dish network and let them know you are having a problem, they may replace your dvr and if you have a protection plan they will often replace it for free.
probably a dying hard drive, but could just be corruption, delete all effected recordings, monitor, if issue continues delete all recordings unplug receiver for 10 minutes, monitor new recordings if continues receiver may need to be replaced
Unfortunately, no. The tuner in your DVD recorder works differently than how your satellite receiver works. You *must* use the satellite receiver to select the active channel, and then send that channel to one of the inputs on your recorder. You can then record that channel. Unless your satellite receiver is has "dual tuners" in it, you are stuck watching the same channel that the DVD recorder is recording.
If your goal is primarily time-shifting of shows (as opposed to archiving shows forever to DVD), you might consider getting a different satellite receiver with a built-in DVR (hard disk recorder). These allow you to mark shows in advance, have them recorded to the hard drive, and then you can watch them whenever you want, skipping all the commercials. You also get the ability to pause and rewind live TV.
