Hi Guyberg
It makes it a little harder if you don't tell us the name of the manufacturer. But if you installed the adapter in the USB port and the computer does not recognize it, then the adapter is not working properly.
Whenever you plug a USB device in a computer (especially the first time and its on) the computer will try to find drivers for it and will display an icon at the bottom right hand corner.
thanks adi
For that make sure your usb ports are working fine.
Right click on my computer icon then click on proeperty then hardware->device manager.
Then uninstall all usb drivers then restart computer.
Then check.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.
Here's what you can do since this is a USB wireless adapter, first connect the USB adapter on a different USB port on the computer better if you connect it on the back USB port of the computer tower and check if the computer will recognize it and if its recognize you can already continue with the software installation , but if not you can restart first the computer and check if the adapter will be recognized if still not the next thing to do here just to know if the adapter is good or bad is to connect it on a different computer and just to check if it will be recognized once its connected to a USB port , because a device should be automatically will be recognized by a computer once you connect it so if its still not recognized by a different computer adapter is bad...
OK I will wait for the follow up on this problem , just tell e what happen...
So we already fix the original problem, now we just need to make sure that you have all the needed wireless settings mots importantly the wireless security key from your router, to double check that access your router setup page and verify the wireless key that you're using and then try to connect to the network again from that router...........
Lets check if that computer is getting a valid IP address from the router because having it saying connected to wireless dont really give us the assurance that its using the correct security key or properly connected to the network, Open the DOS command prompt and type IPCONFIG that should give you a IP that can be starting with 192.x.x.x and if does give you that type this on the command prompt PING YAHOO.COM and hit enter and then tell me what is the reply....
The WPS doesn't work with all wireless device they are sometimes proprietary to the manufacturers devices... so I dont really suggest you use that for this problem better disable first the security on the router and the wireless should work after that and also I suggest that you use WPA PSK as the wireless security on the router and just use a 10 digit key to make it simple for isolation....Thank you for the compliment happy to help you.....
Disable the other wireless adapter on your computer because it will be confused which one the computer will be using for the wireless connection...
There's also a chance that the signal from old router is much stronger than the signal from the other router so you can also try setting the highest channel on the router to provide stronger signal....
Disable the actiontech from device manager and then type this on the command prompt PING 192.168.1.1 and tell me if it replies or gives you a request timed out.....
Yes you can disable and enable it from device manager quickly , if that didn't timed out try typing IPCONFIG/ALL and tell me the DNS server that you have there....
The best way to fix this problem is to uninstall the software that is managing the wireless connection and just let the windows software control the wireless connection, so better uninstall the wireless software from the computer and just install the driver for it....dont run the setup cd ...
Can you please type IPCONFIG/ALL and then provide me the IP, subnet , default gateway and also the dns server not from the actiontech....
I get it now you will only be able to get online using the actiontech wireless network , because that's the connection that has internet, let me ask you do you have 2 wireless router?
The problem here is with the connection of your netgear router it seems that its not yet properly setup to work with your actiontech modem/router so if you want to make sure that the netgear router is providing internet while connected to the actiontech, wire a computer to the netgear router and check if internet will be working if not so that's the main problem here now....
OK better disable the wifi signal from your actiontech router and lets see if that will make any difference now ...

I have done all of the steps that you have suggested except for rebooting the computer. It is recognized on another computer as a USB WLAN device but it cannot find the driver. The computer I am working on does not even display that. I will try rebooting now and want to continue this thread.
Rebooting did help recognize the USB WLAN Adaptor. But I cannot access teh Internet with that wireless connection. I also have an Actiontec wireless network and I can connect with that one. But when I disable the Actiontec, the netgear adaptor connects at 26mbps but i cannot access any web pages
I have tried two methods. The adaptor is connecting to the router so I think that the security key is fine. I tried the WPS which should automatically deal with it. Then I also tried setting a specific key at the router and the adaptor. In both cases the remote compter WLAN manager indicates that it is connected to the router. When I use IE to access the Internet it indicates that it cannot find the page.
It does have a 192. ....... IP address. The Ping timed out. by the way, I am accessing this website from this computer that we are working on. I am using the Action tech connection now so that I am able to connect with you. So the ping was probably testing the Actiontec not the Netgear. Also my son indicated that the computer that has the router connected to it is now having some problems. It is my son's bed time so I need to sign off for the night. I will continue to try to solve in the morning.
shutdown Actiontec and ran the ipconfig and it still found 192........ ip address. But when I tried to ping yahoo.com it set it could not find the host. So it may be the key as you suggested. But my understanding is that if I pushed the WPS button on the router and then selected the soft button on the remote computer it automatically snychronized the security.
I have to sign off tonight. Your support has been excellent. Please suggest a next step to carry on in the morning.
It is morning and I am back again trying to solve the problem. I have a netgear adaptor and a netgear router connected to a Actiontec DSL modem. On the computer where I am trying to get the n protocol configuration working with the netgear adaptor, I can access the Internet using the Actiontec wireless connection. Of course it is at a slower speed. When I bring up the netgear adaptor manager on this PC it shows that the connection is strong and says that i have Internet access. However, when I try to access it it says that it cannot find the site - for all sites. i am pretty confident that the security - WPA and key are correct.
can you see the background of this issue? I ran a diagnostics and i wonder if the problem is that the computer sees two wireless adaptors when it tries to use the netgear connection. Again, please let me know if you see the history of this problem from last night
When I disabled the Actiontec the netgear wireless still says that it is connected but i cannot access the Internet. Ipconfig gives teh address 192.168.1.5 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1 but I can not access yahoo.com when I ping.
i ran the diagnostic with the Actiontec wireless disabled and it still said that it detected a two adaptors. Any other suggestions for disabling the Actiontec. Keep in mind i may need to reenable it right away to respond to you.
Have you looked at the history of this problem. i did what you suggested 8 hours ago before i went to bed last night.
ALL USB ports please re-read my submission and you will see that the adaptor port is working. The issue is some kind of configuration thing
I disabled the connection via network connections and I did not get a timeout when I pinged that address. If I use teh device manager can i quickly turn on the adaptor again/ If not, I may lose communication with you.
I disabled a WiFi and the other wireless adaptor and was still able to ping that address. I have re-enabled things again. I have to reenable to send you a response. I once had two wireless manager software's causing a conflict. Could that be it. Netgear is trying to manage it and the standard windows wireless manager is also trying to manage it. Is that a problem? When I click ont he actiontec wireless icon one manager comes up and when i click on the Netgear the netgear manager comes up. I will disable and try the all
Without actiontec connection enabled I get 192.168.1.1
With actiontec enabled i get 192.168.0.1 and 205.171.3.25
Without the wireless manager for netgear my guess is that the netgear will not work but I will try it. Then I have to get ready for work and will not be able to work on this until tonight. I want to keep working this without losing all this history. what do you suggest? I will not be able to work on it until about 5:30 this evening
Yes, I have two wireless routers. Teh Actiontec is teh DSL to ethernet connverter and also is a wireless moden. the Netgear has to be connected to the Actiontec DSL model/wireless adaptor. I did remove the netgear communication manager from my PC but i still have teh exact same results. Plus the netgear adaptor to enable the n protocol is not working. instead my computer seems to be using its standard wireless connection. i wonder if i turn off that connection what would happen.
The netgear software on the computer connected to the router does check for Internet access and through the diagnostics it did see the internet.
