This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. The velocity is usually sensed by having two contacts for each key. The contacs are usually a conductive rubber pill or sometimes a ring around another pill that press against traces on a circuit board under the keys. You need to clean both the pills and the traces with ONLY 99% isoprophyl alcohol and Q tips. These are usually in "domes" of non-conductive silicone rubber under the keys.

Be careful of the cables when you open the covers of the unit.

I just had the same problem wit my T741. It was a malfunction of the DSP motherboard, not a repair for amateurs. Repairs at the Dutch NAD importer cost me about 130,= euro.

When cleaning buttons HOPEFULLY you did NOT use DeOxit or other contact cleaners like Blue Shower as these can damage the buttons that are conductive rubber.

The conductive rubber buttons should ONLY be cleaned with 99% isoprophyl alcohol and Q Tips. Both the conductive "pill" and the traces they contact on the circuit board should be gently cleaned with the Q Tip wetted with the alcohol.

If you used anything but the 99% isoprophyl alcohol, you can TRY cleaning properly and hopefully they will not have permanent damage.

No I would not repair it. The tip of most stylus are made of a conductive material that will not scratch the screen. But good luck you can get a new one from pretty much anywhere. I myself got one from Walmart that was a Stylus and a pen. Just be careful because you don't want ink on your screen LOL

You will need to get this kit part number 4F1Z-14421-AA from your ford dealer.

1. Place the replacement terminal over the original tab location making sure the conductive areas of the terminal will be on a good conductive area. Do not place the terminal tab foot on the original location which does not have conductive material (figure 4).

2. Hold the terminal in place with an item such as regular lead pencil at a 90 degree angle from the terminal. (Terminal type B can be held in place with tape.) (Holding at other than a 90 degree angle may allow the terminal to slip when the solder liquefies).
3. Place the soldering gun tip on the top of the terminal but not on the painted areas of the tab. Energize the soldering gun and watch for the painted area of the terminal to liquefy and change color. The paint should liquefy in approximately 25-45 seconds after heating. As soon as the paint color completely changes on either side of the terminal, de-energize the soldering gun and continue to hold the terminal in place with the soldering gun and pencil for an additional thirty (30) seconds.
4. Remove the soldering gun and pencil from the terminal. The terminal should be allowed to cool for another two (2) minutes before the wiring lead is attached to the terminal.
5. Attach the electrical lead connection to this terminal, turn on the rear defroster, and verify operation.

the alternator is usually at the top of the engine so you shouldn't have to take anything else off to get to it.
