KAY – You don’t mention how long you’ve had your mixer or how intensely you use it, which would be helpful in assessing your question. Our first KA mixer we got in May 1989, seemed ‘whisper’ quiet compared to the replacement 6 qt Pro mixer our children got SWMBO for Christmas in 2006. The new mixer was so noisy that my wife called Kitchenaid to complain. The wonderful KA ‘Helpers’ explained that KA had changed to making all metal gears in their mixer transmissions as opposed to having one plastic gear (intended to fail instead of burning the motor out). That change from plastic to metal is then main reason your KA mixer seems to be much louder. You should be able to judge if your noise level has increased or stays the same during normal use. Since you stated that you don’t notice any overheating of the mixer I would say that the noise level is appropriate and wouldn’t be overly concerned at this point. That being said, if you hear a change in the noise level – usually louder, it could be indicative of mechanical issues in the transmission, which is what finally happened our mixer. One of the gear teeth broke and the agitator froze up. But that is another story…
I hope this helps. Good luck! Howard – Burke, VA

My handle on KitchenAid KT26S1X Epicurean Stand Mixer is jammed and won't lift or lower bowl. Can you advise?

I'm not familiar with that particular model but the common cause of that fault on the ones I do work on is a broken or cracked lift lever inside the stand. You need to remove the stand from the motor housing. 4 screws going up through the stand into the underside of the motor casing at the back. That will expose the lift lever mechanism for you to identify the problem.

The planetary pan has dropped about 1/2" and I can see the gears.

You need a new planetary. It's that simple, the new post 2002 design for the Epicurean the Accolaid, the Pro and Professional series mixers the planetary is held on by a grooved center pin that is simply pressed onto the planetary cup, when this shaft begins to drop you need a new planetary with new center shaft it is the only KA recognized fix, there is another but you need to have a drill press and be handy at making a jig. It is frankly more effort than buying a new planetary. if the machine is generally run down and you don't want to fix it you can probably sell it for parts, I know that I would be interested, but the machine is a good mixer and a planetary is like $30.00 bucks and takes about a half hour and some paper towels to change out. Easily performed by a DIY'er. Let ud know if this helped.

Is a kitchen aid model # KSM5PSAC the same as KSM150SP?

The KSM5 and the KSM150 are different mixers. They are both 5 quart mixers and use the same gearing and motor. However the bowl design is different. The KSM5 is a 5 quart bowl lift, which means the bowl locks into the arms of the mixer and raises towards the head of the mixer, where the ksm150 mixer is a artisan mixer, which is also a 5quart mixer, but the head of the mixer tilts back and the bowl twists into the base ring to lock into place. These two mixers will take different bowls and beaters.

Grease is driping from the motor down the paddle attachement. Is there some way to fix it?

Carefully pry the chrome ring from the gearhead of the mixer. Item 28 on this page :

You will find 5 screws under the chrome ring. Tighten them and the oil (grease) will stop leaking from the gasket which seals the gearcase halves.

Has very loud gear noise, too much play in worm drive?

Here is the breakdown of your gearbox. Pull it apart by removing the cover of the unit and checking for play from the motor shaft thru to the beater shaft. It will more than likely be one of the plastic gears.
