Kenmore 80 series won't spin

Kenmore 80 series washer will fill, agitate and drain but NOT spin

Yes it fully washes the clothes and drains. It just doesn't spin. I have put in on the wash cycle with the lid open and the machine is agitating. It worked fine just before I washed an old blanket that completed disintegrated in the washer. I check the drain tube to see if it was blocked and it seemed to be clear.

    kenmore 80 series won't spin...same problem

  • danileigh Apr 12, 2008

I have a Kenmore 80 series wash machine that is not spinning. It agitates and drains- however it just stopped spinning. It is also making this annoying noise during the spin cycle. kind of like when you are trying to open a child proof bottle with out pressing down and the top just keeps spinning. I took the load out, redistributed it and the machine still will not spin. I ended up removing the load completely and letting the machine finish its course. Note - the machine was still making that noise with out the load in it.

I am not mechanically inclined, so I would not even know where to begin to fix this myself. Is this something that a repair man would be able to fix- inexpensively??

    Mine Does it too.

  • schech77 Aug 07, 2008

I'm having somewhat of the same problem. My machine will do everything it has to, washes, drains and it gets to the spin cycle and stops. I can set the spin cycle by hand and it will work. However, it won't continue through a full cycle without setting it to the spin cycle by hand. Any Ideas?

Kenmore 80 series washer will not spin. It does everything else. Model # 110.23812100

  • Al Cort Apr 07, 2009

I have the same problem. The washer will not begin a spin cycle unless you initially spin the drum and it will never go fast enough to spin the water out of the clothes. When selecting between fast and slow spin you can hear the motor change speeds. The unit agitates correctly, the drain pies are clear of debris and the drain pump is working correctly.

I Have a Kenmore 80 series basic washer and its been great for 5 years and now it will agitate and wash, then drain but all teh clothes just sit in the bottom soak in wet. I have to manually turn it to thte next spin cycle. Its not the worst thing but it used to spin to finish then I could throw the clothes inteh dryer. now I always have to urn it to the spin cycle and wait till its done....like 30 seconds ...hey still annoying. I'd like to fix it because I like to learn how to work on things.

If it agitates and drains. leaving your clothes clean but soaking wet. It is most likely the transmission/gearbox. the motor is working otherwise it would not agitate. it is stuck in agitate mode and cannot "shift" into spin mode. new transmission will cost 140-170 and takes 2 or so hours to replace depending on skill level. total repair cost parts+labor $300ish you may want to ante up for a new machine at this point. if you cant to the labor yourself.
part# should be this: tho double check using your own model#
Part # AP3096209

Are you sure its agitating??? It sounds like the motor coupling is broken, but it wouldnt wash either. If it really does agitate than the next most common is the spin tub mounting block being stripped, or it could be a clutch or brake not realeasing issue. I do recommend you repair it though all these can be repaired for a reasonable cost.

Some models will agitiate for a couple of minutes even with the lid open. Try listening when you close the lid for a "click". If it is missing you may have a bad lid switch.

you need to check the lid switch, does it click. you can unplug and then remove the 2 screws to see it, if it looks like it is coming apart then the lid switch is bad. you can buy one for about $40 or so dollars. i am assuming it doesn't spin either.

It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

The agitator dogs may be broken or the transmission could be bad. Try checking the agitator dogs first. They are an easy and inexpensive fix.

Kenmore washer 80 series 110 model not spinning.

unless your washer is over 20 years old, then it wont have a belt. the temperature of the water wont have anything to do with it spinning or not.
need to know if it agitates or drains and just wont spin.
if it agitates but no spin or drain, then you have a bad lid switch.
if it wont agitate or spin, but will drain, then you have a broken drive coupling.
