HP 520 Notebook. Boot from bootable CD or USB with Win7 but laptop shuts down before installation begins. Migrated to Win7 thru WinXP running then load Win7 CD. Installation not thru clean install. Even with WinXP bootable CD, laptop shuts down before pressing F8 during installation. why?
I agree a clean install is always the better, fresh start J
OK it sounds like missing drivers, what you have to do is create a new installation CD that will load the drivers for your laptop as it boots. I haven’t try this method with windows 7, but I know it works well with Windows XP. Try and create a new Windows XP CD with the drivers see: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/35/
The start a new installation with this Windows XP CD and reformat you computer, after that you can do a new upgrade to windows 7

Thanks for the info. I'm using 1 1gb and 1 512mb RAM. HD in 3rd boot priority to allow to boot from CD or USB. My laptop only shuts down during installation. I thought the installer isnt bootable so i tried to use the bootable winxp installer that i used to install and format my desktop. Still, the same problem. With the Win7 installer, it shuts down right after loading and coping the installer from the CD (or USB), when it reached 100% screen goes blank and all LEDs have no light. With the WinXP installer, it shuts down before it gets to the part where you press F8 to install a fresh copy of the OS. I'm running on Win7 now, but i really wanted a clean install to remove all the files that i dont need. Thanks.
This is typical of memory problems, I
am stating this judging from the fact that your computer shutdown
with the Windows XP CD. To verify right click in ?My Computer?
select ?Properties? then at the bottom you will see a section
?Startup and Recovery? click on ?Settings? and untick
?Automatically restart?. This way you should see a blue screen,
note down the reason for the error and post it back.
