If water keeps filling or dribbling into the machine with the power off it's the water inlet solenoid. If it overfills only during the cycle then it is the pressure switch or pressure switch tube.
If the water still flows in when the machine is off the inlet solenoid is faulty, if when you push start it fills and keeps filling then the problem will be with either the electronics or the pressure switch. You really need to get someone who has experience with whirlpool machines to look at it for you.
Hi Thanks
for using FixYa. Overfilling in your washer occurs mainly due to two things:
water inlet valve going bad and/or the water level switch. If the water inlet
valve has gone bad it won’t be able to shut off even when the electricity has
been turned off. If the issue is with the water level switch then it won’t tell
the water to shut off and the machine will overflow as this switch is to sense
the water level in the clothes tub. However, with that being said it seems that
you’ll need to replace the water inlet valve. Please do rate the solution if
the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance. Thanks Rylee
If the water stops coming in if you unplug the machine, I would suspect the water level switch. If it keeps coming in, the water inlet valve needs replaced.
If when you press pause while filling and it keeps filling then you have a faulty valve. If the filling stops then valve is ok. If you filling keeps going until overfilling the machine which is what i understand is your problem, then most likely that you have a small pinhole in your pressure tube.
