Need oil plug for a 1988 toro mower - discontinued

I have a toro 20588 gas mower new in 1988. The oil plug underneath just twisted off in my hands this fall. The part is discontinued. The mower starts first time every time... How can I replace that oil plug. I tried a 1/2 inch auto oil plug - too narrow...and a 5/8 plumber plug - doesn't thread in.... Any ideas? Thx.

If you have the pieces of the old plug, take them to a hardware store. Use the thread to find the one you need in their inventory. There are a number of thread designs that you have not mentioned, you can find it there. Good luck...Lee

Have a GTS 5.5 here, and cannot find the drain plug in order to change the(OLD) oil. Had the blade and cover off,and saw no bolt or plug. Also didn't see a plug on the side. Any help appreciated.

Well If You Cant find drain plug [should be a square drive]

Then I would turn the thing upside down [empty gas tank first of course]& drain it thru the filler plug. Perhaps the drain is an inset hex bolt and you must REALLY clean the underneath, dig around for it!

Does toro lawnmower need oil/gas mixture or does it take plain gasoline?

It depends, Toro made 2 cycle and 4 cycle Mowers......Look and see if there is a oil dipstick,If so it is a 4cycle , If no dipstick or plug at crankcase to check oil then it's a 2 cycle

The motor smokes and oil blows into the carberator

if you changed the oil recently you need to use SAE30 and not 10w30. Causes pressure buildup.

Mower starts and stops with in a few seconds

Ok your not getting fuel into the carburetor it sounds. This could be either your carb.needs cleaned or your low idle screw on the carb. needs adjusted. The idle screw is located directly underneath the air filter. Remove filter and turn clockwise all the way and then counter-clockwise 2 1/4 turns, then test. Adjust until it sounds about right.

I have to prime the toro mower every time I empty the bag to get it to start?

  1. what is the model, manufacturer and year of mower?
  2. has any maintenance been performed on this mower?
  3. if no, try replacing the spark plug and air filter (it's possible the spark plug could be fouled and/or the air filter is clogged) be sure to follow the manufacturers recommendations for oil, gas, filters and plugs.
routine maintenance involves:
  1. sharpen/replace blade
  2. oil change
  3. replace air filter
  4. replace spark plug
  5. new gas

HELP, 2007 Toro walk behind mower

There is a drain plug on the block of the motor usually it looks square. if its not behind the blade on the under carriage, then it will be on top above the blades were the motor is visible. you may have to tip the mower on its side to completely drain all the oil. but the plug is always going to be on the motor either on the side or on the bottom. if the plug is on the bottom were the blade is remove the spark plug wire first. a mower can start if you turn the blade by hand and that would be vary bad news so always take the spark plug wire off and make sure it can not come in contact with the spark plug before going underneath the mower.

Toro Lawn Mower Won't Start

this is a very common problem with these toro mowers. the needle valve in the bowl of the carb. is plugged up with dirt or varnish from the fuel. just under the primer bulb there is the carb bowl. it has a nut under it that holds it on remove the bowl and make sure fuel flows constantly while the bowl is off. push up on the float to stop the gas flow. this could be messy and dangerous. careful with the gas. its flammable. best solution is to remove the carb and soak it overnight in a parts cleaner like gunk. caution small parts inside. this happins every year on mine no matter what i do. seems like the orifice is so small it clogs easily. good luck
