I would like to find a replacement jar for a GE Insta Blend 14 Model BL21. The rest of the unit is still in good condition. It is quite old - 70s or 80s model.

The bearing and seal are not replaceable. The bearing is sonically welded into thte base of the jar. The K-Tec is made by Blend-Tec, and any of the Blend-Tec jars will work as a direct replacement.
If you replace the jar first check the printing on your old jar. If your jar has blue print you will need a new jar and blade, Breville redesigned the jar and now the old blades don't work with the new jars. You tell the difference between the jars by the print color, old is blue, new is white.

Common issue with all of these carafe's. Once the jar starts to leak the bearings are shot and it is time to replace the jar. The bearings are non-replacable. Bad design in my opinion. I was able to get my last jar (I have been through 3 before the 5 year warranty went out) to last by hand washing and not putting it in the dishwasher, but after 4 years of use on this jar it failed too.
By now I'm sure you've given up, but do you still need the jar? I have one that is now useless to me since my son tried to run the blender when the jar and base were not seated correctly and the rotors on both were worn off.
Remove the bottom clean the unit fully. Add the bottom blad assebly and this will fix your problem. The "sooty" is plastic shavings. Take note that the fitting were the "jar" connects to the motor that this is not wearing away. The unit i have broke and i am unable to find a replacement blade assembly.
