No, The only thing you may loose replacing the thermostat battery's would be the time/date. All default pre-programming will not be lost. The thermostat controls the unit. If the unit is coming on then the t-stat is working. Confirm the unit is coming on when the T-stat tells it to.Turn the t-stat to the off position, have someone go outside to the condenser unit. Turn the unit on and listen for the fan and the compressor (2) different sounds from the unit. Feel the lines that connect to the house, the larger line should feel cool to cold and the smaller line should feel warm to hot. If you do not hear the compressor, or suspect it is not coming on with the fan, then you may have some other issue. In the heat we have been having one good suspect is a bad compressor start capacitor. The fan comes on but not the compressor,,this is a good indication the cap. is bad.. On the wall by your outside unit is a power disconnect. Open the box and pull the disconnect or flip the breaker to the off position. Now have someone turn the T-stat on and wait a minute then off and wait a minute, on and off ... you should hear a relay clicking on/off or in/out inside the control box of the A/C unit. When in the on position you should hear a slight buzzing sound also once the relay pulls in, this will tell you the t-stat is telling the unit what it should be doing. If all this is good then your unit is just is not cooling right and needs further troubleshooting. Hope this helps FixYa up.
Make sure the control or the remote has actually changed the mode setting to cool function. Try new batteries if necessary or see if the main unit has an overide or manual control to select cooling only. It may be that the compressor is not running at all. The hot air you are feeling may be the room temperature air... Can you hear if the compressor is running or is it just the fan ??
If it is still stuck on heat mode, the reversing valve may be jammed.
If compressor is running and it gets hot and the unit does not cool the compressor is bad or you have a leak in the system. if you see oil there's a leak.
SOME MODELS HAVE A TEMPERATURE DEVICE THAT CONTROLS THE FAN WHEN REAL HOT IT WILL CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE FAN WHEN COOL OUT THE FAN WILL VERY FROM FAST TO SLOW DEPANDS ON THE HEAT BEING PUT OUT BY THE OUT SIDE UNIT IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURES DURING BOTH HOT AND COOL NIGHTS THE FAN MAY BE GOING BAD
Check coolant level, then start engine until it is warm and the thermostat opens. You will tell when it does when the needle on your temp gauge goes cold when it reaches around 180-200* and then goes back up. Now turn on your heater full blast and go to the engine compartment. You will see a heater valve located on the passenger side, next to the washer reservoir. It is a black thing with 4 heater hoses connected to it. Feel the hoses. When everything is working correctly it should be like this:
Hose going to waterpump will be hot
Hose going to (I think the thermostat housing) will be hot
2 Hoses going to heater core (mounted behind firewall) will be hot
1. If only 1 heater core hose is hot, heater core is clogged--
UNCLOG: remove 2 hoses going to heater core when engine is cool, hook water hose end to one of the sides and flush out gunk from heater core. Reconnect hose and you should be good.
2. If neither hose core hose is hot, heater control valve is bad or vacuum is bad--
Test Vacuum: remove vacuum line from heater control valve, you should feel the vacuum **** on it when pressed to your cheek and the heater control valve actuator should move when you unhook the vacuum line. If you have a good vacuum, it's probable the valve available at autozone part # 5941 for around $21.
To get heat while you wait to replace part, unhook silver arm on heater control valve that is hooked to the plunger. This will give you heat all of the time, but it is controlled by the bottom hot/cold switch on your heater control unit so you won't get hot in the cab. It will just circulate heat through the core.
freon and a compressor is about as easy as it gets....Loss of freon will cause erratic cooling...also if you can feel it touch the compressor after it shuts off if if feels like its really hot ....bad compressor that kicks an internal breaker....bad news then
time for new one
also only a airconditioner man can put freon in no 12 . but freon will stay for 50 to 80 years for i tested some old fridges and still cool fine.
