The PS3 will recognize and play any game/dvd with no problem EXCEPT Call of Duty: World at War and Modern Warfare 2. The game does not come up in the system menu.
The Laser was replaced by Sony 1-year ago, and it did not fix the problem. I simply decided to stop sending it in to Sony and having them tell me it was fine.
Now that the new Call of Duty is out, I sort of screwed. I thought there was only a problem with it's predecessor.
I've also done numerous system restores to no avail.

It sounds like you bought a defective laser or it is the chip on your "sister board". There is a chip on the circuit board thats on the bottom of the Blu-Ray drive and it has a silver rectangle on it. Some say that that chip is going bad on some machines. I have repaird 60+ PS3's this year and I haven't had this happen to me yet though. I would suggest trying another laser, then if that doesn't work try a "sister board" from the same model of PS3. I'm still not possitive if that is a possible solution though. The "sister board" is supposedly keyed to only work with the mother board it came with. Well, I hope this helps. Good luck!!
SOURCE: my xbox will read and play call of duty world at
try the disc in another xbox, if the same message appears on more than one xbox take the game to the retailer as its faulty. good luck.

I had the same problem. Dont you alcohol though as it can remove the protective film on the lenz. go to a chemist and just buy some standard lenz cleaner, apply it to a cotton tip and clean the lense in small circular motions. Then dry the lenz with a clean dry cotton tip in small circular motion.
SOURCE: PS3 doesn't recognize any game , DVD or Blue-ray
If your system doesn't recognize blue ray games or blue ray dvds but
still plays normal dvds and music cds your lens is dirty. I had this
problem and my factory and store warranty are up. I decided to take the
machine apart and see what I could do.
If you look online
there are several videos how to take the machine apart. I opened the
machine up, took out the blue ray drive and opened up the drive. Once
you remove the cover from the blue ray drive, take some rubbing alcohol
and a Q-tip and clean the lens. I actually used my t-shirt to wipe it
and blew on the lens and it did the trick. Before you assemble
everything, plug the drive in and pop in a game to see if it works (or
you will have to remove all the screws again.) This should solve your
problem. If your drive doesn't recognize any media, your laser might be
shot.
Once
you tear into it and figure out how everything works you'll realize it's
not very complicated. Otherwise you'll end up spending about 150 bucks
for Sony to do the same thing.
