My rerfigarator a month ago stopped making ice and last night stopped cooling in the fridg and freezer. All lights and fans are working. There is a clicking noise about every 3 to 5 min comming from the back. Any Ideas sears can't get here until next week.
The compressor may not have to be changed it could be the relay that is bad, not properly starting the compressor. The relay is attached to the compressor where the wires go to it. Remove it, Shake it, If it sounds like little rocks are inside (it rattles) than it is bad. Let me know what you find
The compressor is locked up. The clicking noise is the thermal overload turning the relay off and on. The only solutions you have are installing a hard start capacitor. Ther local appliance parts supplier will have this. Its easy to install I personally have had a 50% success rate with these, but its relatively cheap fix if it works, as the other solution is a new compressor. Good luck.
It sounds like you have a burned out start relay on the compressor.
Pull the fridge out and remove the cover at the back. You will see the compressor. The relay plugs onto the compressor and the wires plug on to the relay.
Either the relay is burned out or the compressor is locked up. The only way to know for certain is to replace the relay. The relay is the problem on your model about 98% of the time. You can get one from any Whirlpool parts dealer for around $40, it will cost you around $280 for sears to replace it. The part number is 8201786.
Be sure you replace it with the correct replacement part, a fit-all or 3-in-1 start relay will work for a while but will damage your compressor over time.
Post back if you have any questions.

Glad to be of help.
The icemaker not working is going to be a seperate problem.
Assuming you have a good water supply and your filter is not clogged, the most common part to fail is the motor module in the icemaker. Second is the water valve, Third is the control boards in the freezer liner where you turn the icemaker on and off. Remove the icemaker and pop off the front cover. Look at the center of the large gear. If one side of the clip that holds the gear is broken, you need a new module. You should not be able to slide the gear off the shaft. If the gear has red lettering on it, it is about 75% chance this is your problem. You should be able to get it for less than $100.

Check that the fan motor under the fridge is running. If it is, close the doors and the center post will cool down as the fridge cools. Also pull the toe grill from the front of the fridge and clean the condenser if it is clogged with fuzz. There is a "hot gas loop" that runs in the cabinet to keep the area around the doors from sweating.
If it is not running make sure nothing is in the blade keeping it from turning. If it spins free but won't run, you probably need a new motor. You would need to check for power to the motor to know for sure.
Also, if the fan is running and the condenser is clean, the rear cover will have to be in place so that the fan will direct the airflow properly to keep everything cool.

my freezer is intermittently not working and it keeps clicking on for 10 seconds every 5 minutes or so. the people at the parts house show a start relay or a overload piece, do i need any special tools such as an ohm resistor to change either part?
Thanks
I have the same problem with the clicking sound too. I shook the compressor and it started working for a few hours but is now clicking again. I am really disappointed in Sears because this refrigerator isn't even 5 years old.
build up of ice on ceiling of freezer makes the temperatures go up and down and the fridge stop cooling for 3 days
