Hmmm, I think your Yamaha RXV640 does not have a sub woofer amp, it has a line level low pass output that needs to go to a separate/dedicated sub amp before going to a subwoofer.

If you are already using a subwoofer with its own built-in or dedicated amp, pls be reminded that the cutoff is 90Hz, the subwoofer output jack will only push out audio 90 & below.
Settings wise, guess no harm in double check. In Setup:
Subwoofer - YES
NO LRG
SWFR or BOTH but not MAIN
SWFR balance works on the MAIN Left and the SUB out
A question pls... have you tried plugging in the sub amp's RCA cable to the Yamaha sub out after the RXV640 has already been powered on? If yes was there a thumping sound on the sub?

5.1 Channel Speaker Placement
Front Center Channel Speaker: Place the Front Center Channel Speaker directly in front of the listening area, either above or below the television, video display, or projection screen.
Subwoofer: Place the Subwoofer to the left or right of the television.
Left and Right Main/Front Speakers: Place the Left and Right Main/Front speakers equidistant from the Front Center Channel speaker, about a 30 degree angle from the center channel.
Left and Right Surround Speakers: Place the Left and Right Surround Speakers to the left and right side, just to the side or slightly behind the listening position - about 90-110 degrees from the center channel.
These speakers can be elevated above the listener.
6.1 Channel Speaker Placement
The Front Center and Left/Right Main speakers and Subwoofer are the same as in a 5.1 Channel configuration.
Left and Right Surround Speakers: Place the Left and Right Surround Speakers to the left and right side of the listening position, in line with or slightly behind the listening position - about 90-110 degrees from the center. These speakers can be elevated above the listener.
Rear Center Channel Speaker: Directly behind the listening position, in line with the Front Center speaker - May be elevated.
7.1 Channel Speaker Placement
The Front Center and Left/Right Main speakers and Subwoofer are the same as a 5.1 or 6.1 Channel set up.
Left and Right Surround Speakers: Place the Left and Right Surround Speakers to the left and right side of the listening position, in line with or slightly behind the listening position - about 90-110 degrees from the center. These speakers can be elevated above the listener.
Rear/Back Surround Speakers Place the Rear/Back Surround Speakers behind the listening position - slightly to the left and right (may be elevated above listener) - at about 140-150 degrees from the front center channel speaker. Rear/Back channel surround speakers can be elevated above the listening position.

NOTE: To aid in your speaker setup, take advantage of the built-in Test Tone Generator that is available in many Home Theater Receivers to set your sound levels. All Speakers should be able to output at the same volume level. A inexpensive Sound Meter can also help with this task.

Just play around with output quality 5.1 , 7.1 . You see different types of sorroud sound will be configured differently.
2.0 will only be 2 speakers, 5.1 5 7.1 7 and so forth. its just a matter of sellecting the correct audio format.
Go to audio set up and configure the system for 5.1 or higher sound output.then only all the speakers ll work

I to have this problem .. did you solve it? Because I'v been on it for hours now trying to hook up my new SVS PC12 NDS.. before I used different subwoofer where I had to hook it up with spekaer cables and that worked, but with the SVS there are only a single RCA to be connected with.
When go into test mode my main speakers, front left and right work, but it comes out nothing from my SVS.. I'm starting to think it might be broken. If you kow then please let me how you did.

If you found out what the problem was I sure like to know what it was because I just can't get it to work. There is a testsignal going to the SVS PC12 nds but there is no sound. If connect the RCA in and out off the reciever the subwoofer makes a sound, it's not borken I just bought it. Before I used speaker cables to connect my subwoofer on my old one, the SVS does only have RCA..
When I go to Basic set up I set the speakers to front lef and right + subwoofer but when on exit from set up the subwoofer dissapears and only front speakers are left. There are no SAVE button so don't know what to do.. clueless..
