Toro Lawn Mower Electric Start Won't Engage

I have a Toro Model 20018 Electric Start Lawn Mower. When I try to start it with the Electric Start, it just makes a ''whirring'' sound, and doesn't seem to engage the motor... (probably doesn't engage the flywheel is the correct term)
The battery is fully charged, and it starts with the Pull Cord ok, but I want to be able to use the Electric Start.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?
Thanks,
Jim

You'll need to pull the starter. It sound like your Bendick's is bad. that's the upper gear drive assay. the only other res ion would be, low power to the starter, and not receiving an acquit amount of amp to reach the rpm's it needs. good luck

I have the Toro 20070 and having the same problem. I removed all the removable parts on the starter; cleaned, inspected and found out that the "Gear" can rise up and down on the "Armature" to engage the fly wheel. I will move the "Gear" to the flywheel, turn the key and the engine will start; however, the "Gear" goes back up over the flywheel than I will get that grinding sound again.
I believed a part is bad, but I do not know which one. I have the part list and diagram.
Can anyone help me with this problem.

I have a Toro 22"

Odds are the battery needs replaced. If it is a 12V battery, you could try jump starting to test the starter to verify. If it is a 6V battery you will have to find another one to jump. You could check the battery with a multimeter to check voltage if you have one or know of someone who does. Make sure you know how to do this properly so as not to destroy the meter. The meters can be cheap or expensive, depends on the model and the features, but always bad idea to let out the magic smoke.

I hope this helps.

Toro Personal Pace Mower won't start w/ electric starter

There are a couple of things you can check;

First, check to make sure the bendix is engaging. It is the gear that meshes with the fly wheel.

If it is, then try and see how fast the motor is spinning. Don't look at the blade though. It could be a faulty starter motor.

Make sure to also check the battery voltage with a volt meter. It should read at 12.0 or higher.

It sounds like the starter drive may be jammed. It should not be engaged unless you are using the starter motor. Take the spark plug wire off, put on heavy leather gloves, and try turning the blade by hand to dislodge the starter drive. If it does dislodge, plug the spark plug wire back up and try the pull start again.

Toro mower dies when i try to pull out

Disassemble carburetor and spray with carb. cleaner. Use a Den Tek Brush,
(http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb. Make sure that the small screen is free of debris. Reassemble and start.
If this doesn't work, then you will need to buy a carb. kit and replace all the appropriate parts.
