First screen blank, now printer won't come on

May be coincidence.
for repairing display the solution is to change ribbon cable: go there

But probably you might have got solution before doing this.
Check supply block if you can (grey, on rear left back, after returning printer) May be necessary to buy repair manual on ebay ($2.95)

I cannot scan because display is a black screen. I can print though.

The flex cable for that display breaks internally and leaves you a blank display. Canon has a replacement cable for around $10.00. Easily repaired in a shop.

This worked for me:
1. Close the display lid as far as possible so you are just able to reach the power button.
2. Power off and back on.

Blank LCD display screen

You need to check firstly that the LCD connections are still connected correctly inside the printer and then you can enter service mode on the printer and run an LCD test. To open printer and run test you will need a service manual:

I have a Canon Pixma MP520 and the little screen is blank where it normally shows printer, scanner, copy etc etc it was working and now its not

try turning it off and on again. the printer sometimes will power on but if the LCD still doesnt appear it could be shot already.

I had this problem too and I discovered that there is a sort of switch in the display lid that malfunctions. It is probably there to switch off the display if you close the lid while the printer is on.

The solution is to open the lid just enough to reach the on/off switch and turn the printer on. If you now open the lid fully the display is up and running like you were used to.
