6 month old GE dishwasher now leaves heavy film on dishes...

This dishwasher has worked very well for about 6 months but now leaves a heavy film on everything (e.g., glass, plastic, flatware). I've watched it through a complete cycle and it appears that everything is working (i.e., fills, drains, water is hot, etc.). We haven't changed anything that would have to do with the dishwasher's operation (i.e., same Electrasol detergent, the rinse receptacle is full). I read on the net to throw some vinegar in at the rinse cycle which helped remove the several cycles of film but left the dishes smelling of vinegar. I've called GE and they will send a technician but I'd really like to know what this problem may be before this person shows up.

Thanks for the info on the vinegar. How do you use less detergent when it comes in those pre-measured cubes (with the rinse ball)?

As far as using the vinegar, this should be complete when there is NOTHING in the dishwasher. The idea is to remove the build up inside, not clean the dishes. Make sure to use only White Vinegar. Also, changes in the water of any kind can cause a build-up. Try using a little less detergeant and rinse.

In this case there is no way to reduce the amount. Check the water supply for calsium. This will build up under the screen and turn the water foggy thus leaving a coating on dishes. To check, look at one of your glasses. It it has a light milky look then I would suspect calsium. Do you have a water softer/filter ? If you do, check this unit also.

Calcium is usually found in water treatment plants. It is added as a healthy by-product. This would have to be filtered out at the home. There are several filter/softener manufactures on the market.

Getting a film on drinking glasses.. dishwasher is 6 months old... was working fine until last week

The problem is most likely that there is still water residue at the bottom of your machine. If the machine is not fully drained it picks up some of the residue and sprays that onto the dishes during the final rinse, leaving an unhealthy and unsightly film on everything.
Remove the bottom strainers and make sure that there is nothing obstructing the outlet pipe and the pump. If possible back flush through the outlet pipe and try draining the machine again before using it again.
