You can upgrade the RAM providing you have the slots available.
The maximum supported RAM in windows 7 is 4GB. You will find the serial number on the bottom of the laptop, possibly in the battery bay. You can use the following scanner to check the required RAM.

You most likely can't. OEM system builders...HP, Acer, Lenov, DELL usually don't provide a recovery disk with their laptops so they can charge you later when you need it. This is done to keep their costs down and increase profit.

Most cases, when you got your new laptop, there were instructions to "Create Recovery discs". But 99% of most users never do.

Result: you will need to call Acer and order the recovery discs or see if anyone has them on ebay/craigslist cheaper. Acer is best bet, so you don't end up with wrong or non-working discs and prolong your problem. Should be about $25-50 including shipping.

You will need to contact Miscrsoft sales support on this, they can order the correct version for you.

There is no upgrade from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7. You will need to a fresh install and erase all files.

Is it asking for a serial no. or a product-key? The upgrade should have come with a Product-key. It would be formatted in the same way the upgrade program asks for it.

For example: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Check again. Or comment back with more details about what is happening.

hope youre not trying to install it using the old serial number on the sticker on your case? It should have come with a new serial number to install. You also have to have XP or Vista to perform an upgrade otherwise you need a full installation CD.

The free upgrade is sent out by the laptops manf. directly to you as long as you bought the laptop in the past 4 months. It is regardless of the current version of Windows Vista that you are running. According to an article found here

"Acer says "shipments will begin in increments. All orders will be handled on a first-in, first-out basis." So if you bought a computer last week, you could be at the end of a long line."

Best you can do at the moment is just wait, your not going to be able to do much till Acer ships out that upgrade. Even if you did install Windows Vista Premium, you would be stuck till you got the Windows 7 from the manf.
