Your tractor was manufactured by AYP (American Lawn Products). They make ALL of Sears tractors. (The #917 prefix is the giveaway - Murry would have been #502). They also make the tractors for Poulan, Roper, Sears, Rally, Wizard, Woodwards, Yard Master, Kgro, Rally and several others. My tractor is also a AYP and all Sears tractor parts will work on my Ranch King.
You can find any AYP part you need at Outdoor Distributors.

If you don't have your original a owners manual with parts breakdown, you can download one here:

(Parts breakdown starts on page 31).
I suggest that you go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=917.254860+ and find your part there.
Hope this helps you.
Go to a small engine repair shop for your part.
Sears tractors are just other tractors (Mostly Murray brand )with the sears name on them......as are most others.
There are only 2 or 3 manufacturers making all the tractors.
Your part should be easily ordered there with your model and serial #.
Sears carries or will procure parts for nearly all Craftsman products and has illustrated parts breakdowns for thousands of them.
Go to the link below and enter your machine's model # to see
if yours is one of those they cover:
If you find it, it will have a line-drawing illustration that can aid in determining how to access the different parts.
