WHY DOES WHITE SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE SIDE

If it's coming from around carburetor area than you most likely have a blown head gasket. It's building up to much pressure in block and its blowing out your vent tube.

What would be the cause of a Kohler 25hp twin, backfiring through carb from one cylinder

now the kohler v-twin does have a bit of a problem with camshafts in this size range , your gonna need to remove valve cover on head side that you suspect is bad , verify that valves move in order (one at a time) as you turn over by hand with spark plugs removed (both sides)

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

Cutting out in first unless have revs up starting to blow smoke lost power in all gears little bit of backfiring

White smoke means blown head gasket. Black smoke means to rich of fuel. Backfire could be timing is out sounds like timing chain or belt is going.

I have a sears lawn tractor with a 25 hp ohv briggs and stratton engine. The problem is that it runs very rough, black smoke and has no power when the deck is engaged. I have replaced the air filter,...

So have you actually checked spark to both plugs? If so then inspect valves to be sure valves are operating. Sounds like running on one cylinder. A quick check would be to unplug one spark plug at a time. You may find if you remove the dead plugh wire, there is no change. If you unplug the running cylinder it probably won't start. Sometimes the compression release mechanisms can come apart or come loose. Download your manual for you engine model at www.briggsandstratton.com

27 horse power briggs on poulan pro. It smokes,

Very likely, the piston rings are badly worn or stuck. There may even be a small hole in a piston. In any case, you will need a major tear-down to repair this one. This is usually caused by lax oil-changes. It might be better to purchase a replacement engine than try to fix everything that could be wrong with the present unit if you take into account parts and labor. Hope this helps!
