If your machine is a FAV6800AWW/FAV9800AWW take a look at this post Spin cycle locks up.

I believe this forum member’s clutch pulley is locking up in the wash cycle. Pull the 120VAC plug on the machine to remove power. You need to remove the front cover to inspect the Clutch Pulley and see if you can rotate the Clutch Pulley Counter Clockwise the spin direction then Clockwise the wash/agitate direction. The rotational resistance should be free and very light. Post back with the results and we will go from there.

Here are some links for the Service Manual.

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point. With a 5/16 nut driver or 5/16 ¼ socket on an extension to remove front panel see page 41 of the SM

My guess would be you either have an oil leak that is causing the smell and causing the serpentine belt to slip, or you have a pulley for the serpentine belt that is not spinning freely and causing the belt to slip. A slipping belt can also cause the burning smell that you describe. You might have a AC compressor clutch that is failing and not freewheeling correctly, you could have an alternator with a bad bearing, you could have an idler pulley or tensioner pulley with a bad bearing, etc. I'd certainly be checking for an oil leak as well though.

Washer does not spin, has a burning smell. took off front panel. motor pulley feels hot, so does belt. replaced belt 6/09. only wash one load per week. where is the burning smell coming from?

This sounds like a frigidaire washer. If it is, the belt must be the original equipment manufacturers belt. ANY other belt will just slip and burn. The fact that the pulley and the belt were both hot tells me that either the belt is the issue or your main tub bearing is starting to seize.

Smell rubber burning when on spin cycle

This sounds like the belt is slipping, which will burn the rubber and give you that smell. Replace the belt and be sure the tension pulley spins easy.

This sounds like a belt burning. Something may have got caught in the pump and the belt is slipping and burning. You will need to drain all the water out first. Then remove the front panel. Tilt the machine back a little so you can reach the pump pulley and see if it turns freely. Your model has 2 belts and they both should be replaced at the same time. Adjustment on the pump belt is critical so the drive belt doesn't slip. If something is caught in the pump, whatever it is needs to be removed, or replace the pump.

The burning rubber smell may be a slipping belt; as the belt slips it will literally overheat to a point it has a burning smell (it will not burst in to flames though) The belt I would expect, given you issue, is that of the power steering pump. If the pump is beginning to sieze (not wanting to turn) the belt may begin to spin on the pump pulley. Curious if you have any noise of the belt slip, typically a high-pitched squeal? If the belt is slipping it should have a glazed or shinny look to it. In writting I come to think that just the belt itself may be old/worn, not to proper tension and causing the issue. In short if this is the issue it may be as simple of replacing the belt and put to proper tension or poosibly the power steering pump has begun to fail. The attached image may help

Hoover mach 4 burning smell

There are two reason you could be smelling a burning smell-
1. The belt is too stretched out and needs to be replaced. This causes it to slip when the vacuum is on and will create that type smell. You can avoid stretching and having to replace the belt to often by releasing the belt after each vacuum.

2. There may be hair or other debris stuck around the rod that the belt is attached to. Can be avoided by checking after vacuuming.

Hope this helps

Burning smell

Sounds like your drier is over loaded. Belt slipping due to : to much weight in drier. The drier motor is an adjustable. Belt test: If you can twist belt more than a half a turn it is to lose. Replace belt.
