You can go to the Yardman website and download the service/owner's manual.

If the belt is correct you may have wrapped the belt around a "belt keeper" that you didn't see and the belt is dragging on the keeper ,or the belt is not correct,or it was not installed in it's correct path.

I can't give you an answer on this without knowing the model number of your mower.

sounds like the spring putting tension on the belt is missing or weak

The OEM size for the belt is 1/2 x 76 1/4. You can use a 1/2 x 76 aftermarket belt as well.

If you are missing the manual, for the said model,
I have found that the simplest way, of figuring out the correct route for the belt, is to remove the deck, and hold the replacement belt above the mechanism, with the tension from the engine end.
Then 'mock up' the replacing proceedure, bearing in mind the correct direction the tensioner/s, move in.
Then it's not too difficult to figure it out the correct route.
