We have a GE over the range microwave that uses a charcoal filter to recirculate. We took the top front grill off and see that the filter goes there. The manual is not clear on exactly how it fits. It just lays in there and when we turned the fan on it raised up. Does it go up top, slanted, straight. Manual says it should snap in place, but it does not.

External vent systems have the charcoal filter removed, generally at the time of installation, as it is not needed for this application.
The charcoal filter removes odors from internal recycled airflow.
There should be an aluminum grease filter that you can remove to clean in a warm soapy solution, let dry, and reinstall.

I just installed a JVM 1540 with the same grille. I removed the two top phillips screws before mounting the oven as I cannot access these screw heads once the oven is installed. It took me about 20 minutes of fiddling with the grille to figure out (no thanks to the manual) that the grille needs to slide to the left to release so you can change the light bulb/charcoal filter.

I have a new ge 1540 and needed to remove the grill to install the charcoal filter.
After removing the two screws on top, you need to slide the grill about 1/2" to the left. Then the grill will wiggle loose and can be removed.
