Maytag french door, freezer on bottom mfd2561hes stops cooling (both freezer & fridge for 1 -2 days & then just starts back up, always 2-3 hr before repairman is due. When it's not cooling hear a buzzing sound that lasts for 5-6 sec and repeats every 5-10 min, or so. Any ideas?
You can get a 3 in 1 hard start kit from any hvac supply house and install to the compressor. There is a lot of video on YouTube on how to installed a hard start kit
The buzzing is typically gonna be the compressor trying to start and failing. Am I right in saying the fridge is at least 12 or more years old?
Maytag used to use a compressor made by Tecumseh and they had a problem with starting. They would buzz and sometimes start back up. Sometimes in a few tries or a few days or never. It would continue to re try every couple minutes and last 5-10 seconds.
I would verify if it is a Tecumseh or an Embraco compressor then make your decision.
A service tech should be able to figure this out pretty easily! Normally what I would do is if I go in and it is running then I would turn it off and back on right away. the fridge will go through its restart sequence and typically make its noises then. Hopefully you are not being charged every time they come out
Compressors are the most expensive repair! and on these I always replace the discharge tube since they tend to rot out from sitting in the drain pan.

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.
Testimonial: "It was the compressor. Bought a new Amana and it's great! Hate Sears still;)"

buzzing sound comes from freezer fan or ice maker fan. They are located behind the freezer rear wall. These freezer fan cools the freezer and the refrigerator. The ice maker fan supply air to ice maker.

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again
