There are several "free" apps for iPad/iPhone printing. Mostly quirky. I have had luck with : Epson iPrint, iCan Print, and Epson Printer finder. Its best if your printer is wifi ready. This gives it an IP address and is more easily connected to your iDevice.
As far as I have tried, every wifi printer worked for me, you should only configure it properly. Most printers doesn't connect to existing wifi - they create their own unprotected network and you will be able to print only when connected to that network. To avoid changing networks every time you want to print, you should connect your printer using USB cable to a PC and configure it to connect to your existing wifi network, then you will be able to print and surf the web on the same wifi network.
