My whirlpool gas water heater model N50T61-403 has gone out. I have tried restarting it 3 times per the manufacturers instructions. Any idea what the problem is.

My first suspect is the thermocouple has failed (they should be changed periodically, every 5-7 years as they do fail). Without the signal from the thermocouple, the gas valve can not open and start the ignition process.

SOURCE: Tankless water heater pilot light will not stay on

It is most likely the water valve stuck open, telling the controls to heat water, that it thinks is flowing through it, but without actual flow it overheats. Depending on how comfortable you are with taking it apart yourself, you could open the valve to see if it just needs cleaned out, or if you have a ruptured diaphragm or some other cause.

SOURCE: Electronic ignition tries to lite, clicks 5 times, then goes POOF

Gas burners go "poof" when they have too much gas in the area upon lighting. This is normally due to the ignition source not being close enough to the initial source of gas. This is normaally corrected by ensure the main burner is clean so that it distributes the gas correctly and having the ignition source at proper strength and location. I would have to have good schematics of your heater to be more specific. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: pilot light on water heater goes out frequently

Check the following:

See if your heater has a pilot gas adjustment valve. It should be on the gas control valve somewhere. Not all heaters have these. It will be a screw on the valve that can be turned.

Make sure the thermocouple sensing bulb is squarely in the pilot flame and also check that the fitting where the other end of the thermocouple connects to the main gas valve is tight.

Check the pilot gas orifice (where the pilot gas comes out) for carbon build up - you may need to remove the pilot gas line and thermocouple assembly to get to this. This problem is pretty common.

Check the gas pressure to the heater. Run the hot water in the dwelling until the hot water heater starts. Check the flame on the main burner and see what color it is - it should be blue with possibly some yellow-tipped flames. If not, there could be a problem with the gas pressure at the heater or venting. If the heater has a gas pressure regulator, it may be out of adjustment or defective.

Finally, and this isn't very common, the pilot light can be extinguished if there is a draft problem, usually associated with an issue with the flue pipe venting system for the heater or another nearby gas consuming appliance.

Testimonial: "thank you. will try these suggestions tomorrow. really appreciate it."

Where can I get the new sensor unit for Whirlpool water heater (N40S61-403)?

1) Call whirlpool
1-877-817-6750
Need model and serial number located on label on side of tank

2) Copy following links for troubleshoot and repair resources, including service manual by type of gas control valve.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

3) Get parts sheet from manual that arrived with new product.

4) Otherwise, neither Whitlpool or Craftmaster.has up-to-date product manual, parts sheet, or service manual, rendering their sites near useless for many owners.
Whirlpool site has 'troubleshoot and repair' section, but this is NO help for serious DIY repair.

Replace thermocouple gas water heater

Thank you for the brand. Approx how old is water heater? 2nd and 3rd digit of serial number are year of manufacture.
For general instructions:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

Reliance is AO Smith, and air intake is located on bottom of tank.
Inspect and Clean intake.
Do NOT underestimate need to keep air intake clean because the arrestor screen is fine mesh and once clogged will cause heater to fail. Older models might need full replacement and at least parts.

Product manual?
These gas water heaters are changing quickly today. The Reliance site shows the 909 but not 805
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om.html
The older designs are different, but instructions shown above will help.

We have a bradford defender model # MI403S6FBN7. How do we reset it. lost manual

Water heaters are a huge field of knowledge. Problem is not 100% clear.
There is a resettable thermal switch on the combustion door. This switch is round and has two wires that come from gas control valve. Thermal switch trips when combustion parts have not been cleaned and they cause overheated condition, or sensor reads temperatures above 180, or thermal switch has gone bad, or gas control has gone bad.

Older models have the dial-type Robert Shaw or White Rodgers gas valve.

I have a whirlpool water heater mod. Fg1f4034t3nv. Igniter will not work'.instructions missing. Have all lines. Etc disconected how do I get assembly out?

I don't know because I can't see it, and I don't have manual.
But I can give you resources:
Call Whirlpool:
(877) 817-6750

Whirlpool is usually Craftmaster which is American which is AO Smith.
http://www.hotwater.com/water-heaters/residential/conventional/gas/
Age of water heater shows on serial number: first two digits should be year, second two digits should be week.

The market is always changing.
Find manufacturer using label on side of tank, find manual with parts diagram, and order burner parts. Whirlppol site does not have manuals.

It might be cheaper to install a new water heater yourself from box store for $330.00

Pilot will not stay light but will turn on and work properly

When having a problem with pilot and burner, the place to start is troubleshoot section in your manual.
Whirlpool is probably made by Craftmaster which I believe is a Rheem company, and Rheem makes a number of different models.
Some models have specific manuals and others have generic manuals.
Open Rheem water heater page and click on water that matches your water heater. On page that opens, click on tab that says 'specs' and then download manual.
http://www.rheem.com/Products/tank_water_heaters/gas_water_heaters

If none of those water heaters look like yours, open following link to help identify company website and download manual. Craftmaster website does not have instruction manuals.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

All gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
Some require yearly maintenance.
The burner parts require cleaning.
