6 flashes is typically found with power vented and flue damper type heaters ... whirlpool never sold a power vent, but they did sell the AO Smith brand flue damper series heater.
The following manual suggest the problem is either gas supply or pilot assembly.

This is not a solution to that problem, but the dripping water is just condensation from the cold water in the tank. Like a coke can on a warm day. It goes away after everything warms up. It is more than likely a gas valve, but I have fooled mine into working by not turning the valve all the way up to the full on position.
SOURCE: no hot water, pilot light lights but no burner ignition
Thermo coupler may be defective. it controls the main gas valve by closing main if pilot is out. make sure thermo coupler bulb is positioned over and near tip of pilot flame, but not in the flame. Thermo couplers are inexpensive and easy to change out.
SOURCE: The pilot light & will stay lit. untill the burner cycles on/off
MAKE SURE THE BURNER TUBE AND ORIFICES ARE CLEAN. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PROPER LP PRESSURE.
SOURCE: water heater pilot and burner keep going out.
If this is a common occurrence, then it may be time to replace the thermocouple that controls the pilot part of the gas valve. If it still keep going out, gas valve may be faulty.
