Please remove the device from any power source, and then press and HOLD the power switch for 10-30 seconds - until the device either turns off or back on again. By the way, what this is doing is a "soft reset" of the device.
After that, turn the device OFF and back ON again - to TEST to make sure it powers up normally.

I had a 200 W Nuvi with the same problem. Luckily it happened with the first 3 months, so i could return it to Garmin under warranty for a free replacement

This is easy. You have to run your software, select the maps tap and then transfer maps to the device. Chances are good you uploaded a 2009 map on top of the 2008 map. The updater doesn't delete maps.
Your unl file only has one key, you have two maps loaded. Simple go into the garmin directory and delete the map file and the mapsupp file. You can easily find them because they are greater than 500 mb.
Then run mapinstall (google for the file). This will install your most current map to the Nuvi. You are back in business.

Try the reset, and if that fails, download the web updater from the
garmin site and try that route.
Master reset will erase all way
points or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory
settings.

There is a corrupt or missing file associated with the mapping thats causing it to lock up. When that file is missing, your Nuvi never gets to the routine for communicating with your PC. That's why your PC can't detect it.
I've fixed this problem before. The unit must be placed in PRE-BOOT mode, forcing Windows to recognize it and then using a specific program, reflash the firmware to an older version that doesn't care that the file is missing. The unit will then boot properly and you'll regain detection to the unit in Windows. Then you can repair/replace the missing files and then reflash back to the latest firmware.
Yes, its a pain and not an easy process to the novice.

Try the Hard Reset procedure outlined in this tip.
Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?
This
tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to
backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them.
A
hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit
quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally
recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required
by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior
with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a
hard reset of the unit. It's also one of the first things that Garmin
will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior.
Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:
The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.
Perform the Hard Reset:
*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit
If possible
after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about
30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.
You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.
I hope that helps.
