The Choke's function is to limit air intake till engine reaches opperating temperature.It should decrease to nill if auto.If not then try increasing the idle.Good Luck.

There is a diaphram that the link connects to the choke. It is between the carb and the gas tank, and runs by the vacuum from the engine. B&S engines have to rev up for the choke to open all the way.
Carb. needs to be rebuilt. If your choking the engine it to keep the alive and you've cleaned and replaced everything else, I would recommend carb. overhaul.
Check fuel pump delivery for adequate flow. If when choke enrichment is applied and it runs, then dies when choke is off, fuel flow is inadequate and needs choke enrichment to compensate. Also, if engine dies or chokes when increasing rpms, this will be a symptom of too little fuel. Check fuel flow at pump, then, if flow is good, check for carb blockage, unscrew the jet and inspect, check the operation of the solenoid at the bottom of the bowl, it has a wire attached to it. Trace that wire to where it plugs in, unplug it and touch it to the positive pole of the battery, it should retract. If not you need a new solenoid that has the job of metering in gas to the inner bowl below the jet assembly.
if it is already running and you "engage" the choke, you will flood the engine with too much gas and it will sputter and die. the only time you engage the choke is to start the engine when it is cold. if the mower dies when you remove jumper cables, and you leave the choke alone, you need to have someone look at your charging system.
