SOURCE: my water heater is making my electic meter spin like mad

Hi Is this powerstar AE115 a tankless water heater? I suspect the 115 designator in the model number means it runs on 115 volts. And what is the second Tank ? Storage or an electric water heater? Both should be rapped with insulation to hold the heat. Meaning storage or electric water. Don't rap a tankless water heater. At the very least get a licensed electricen in to make sure you electrical service will support a 240 volt system. If it can , do it. Think of electricity as a river flowing. Volts are the speed the water flows. Amps are the force ( Also caled Impedeance) that push the water.( And spin your meter like a top I might add.) And resistance as how many bolders, Rocks, Old fords that are in the river bed slowing down the flow of water. Now here is where OMES LAW comes in. E= I x R. (E) volts is equel to the (I) impedeance (Amps) multiplied by the ( R) resistance. You can spin this in a clockwise direction and find the net value by dividing one from the other to get the net. ( I = R * E ) If This is true ( and it is ) if we double the voltage (current) we can realise a reduction on the Impedeance (Amps) of up to 1/2 of its current value. In other words if you were useing 100 amps @115v you will use 50 amps @240v Depending on the resistance. Sorry but I forget the voltage drop on 100 feet of copper wire but I assure you its real low.But your best bet would be to use a tankless water heater core in you boiler that you use for heat if you got one and save the electric for summer mode.

SOURCE: when hot water is turned on the pipes make this vibrating sound.

A rumbling more than a vibration? If one in the same, the heating elements may have calcium build up which causes perculation like the perculator coffee pot which causes the heater to vibrate or rumble. If the elements can be removed they can be cleaned by soaking in lime away or a descaling solution. All said and done it will work like new.

SOURCE: I need to know the breaker size and wire gauge and

According to the user manual below, it's a 50 amp heater, therefore, you need 6 AWG electrical cable and a 50 amp double pole (220 volt) breaker in the main service panel.

You need two hot wires and a ground wire. The cable would be specified as 6/2 w/ ground. The 2 hot wires in the cable would be red & black or black & black -- these attach to L1 & L2 respectively. ( L = Line )

More info, let me know.

The only Whirlpool electric heater I know with control board is Energy Smart electric:
Open following link to identify product and download sample manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

First of all, the water heater is always full of water.
When you turn on hot water tap, hot leaves top of tank, and new cold water immediately enters bottom of tank through the dip tube. The tank never has air pockets as these would damage tank as explosive steam would fill that pocket ... remember they used to run locomotives with steam power.
So the tank is always full of water, and you know that since no air comes out of the hot water faucet.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

You did not say if this is new heater, or if heater was working correctly and stopped functioning.

What you describe does not sound normal.
I suggest calling Whirlpool at 1-877-817-6750.
You need to have serial number and model number from label on side of tank so product can be fully identified by Whirlpool.

If control board is bad, they will know and will sell you new board.
Installation is easy, and wires are color coded.
Replacement comes with instructions.

I have whirlpool gas water heater sg1j5040t3nov. It is blinking 6 times which says upper sensor failure. Is this something we can fix. Please advise.

Called whirlpool and explained the problem. They said I need to replace that upper sensor and so they sent me a part in the mail which cost roughly $25. (usd) not including the overnight shipping which is around another $25 or so. This picture is what I received in the mail. Comes with directions of installment. _273.jpg

To check the elements hot water hearter stop heating.whirlpool electric

While the power is off to the water heater it's safe to remove the access panels. Once the elements are exposed a multimeter that is set on the Ohms can be used. The average reading of a good element is around 12 ohms. This can range a few ohms up or down. If you don't get a good reading the element will need to be replaced.
If the water heater has two elements the top element should be checked first. When a Whirlpool heater has two elements and the top goes out this will cause the water heater not to heat at all.
If both elements show they are good it would be recommended to contact the manufacturer. The technical support line for the Whirlpool water heaters is 1-877-817-6750.

It will work for few days then goes out. I reset the pilot light

Hi. Some of the whirlpool water heaters are notorious for having plugging problems on the air inlet screen. They are the air slots under the burner. Clean the slots with a brush and re-light. You may need to clean them regularly.
Hope this was helpful!

We just bought a Whirlpool Electric 50 gallon water heater 2 months ago. Now, the water will stay hot for about aminute and then turn luke warm. Suggestions?

You need to be skilled to work on live electrical appliances. If you are I can continue. If not you need to call a electrician or a plumber.

Make sure both thermostats are set at the same temperature. Let me know what you find.
