My tractor will run fine for about 40 feet. The engine will keep running but it will not drive anymore. What will cause this?

Check and see if there is a shear or safety pin in one of the drive pulleys that has broken.See if there is a pulley that turns by hand when this happens. Could be one has broken but grabs for a little bit. Also check the drive belt and see if it is slipping Check all the drive areas . BE SAFE BY TAKING THE KEY OUT AND TRYING BY HAND>

SOURCE: 2305 tractor keeps stalling out

Hello eireannachcr:

>>Check All the Fuel Connections and Make Sure they are Tight.
>>From Your Description it Sounds like a Loose Fitting or a Bad Compression Washer.
>>A Bad Compression Washer or Loose Fitting will Allow the Fuel to Drain Backwards (sometimes it takes setting for a few days for the Fuel to Bleed Back) when the Engine is Not Running. Once the Engine is Started, it Runs Correctly Until the Air Pocket in the Fuel Gets to the Injector Pump and then the Engine Stalls. The Fuel Behind the Pocket Keeps the Pump and Lines Primed so the Engine will Restart without Bleeding Any Air from the Fuel System.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. *You can Drag the View Windows for Better Viewing.*
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

those fluid drive transmissions fail on quite a few brands as they all use the same ones....replace the trans...they are expensive but still cheaper than a new mower.

Toro riding mower stopped moving

If you have no forward, no reverse but the motor is still running normally the most likely reason for this is the main drive belt. This connects the motor to the transmission. If it stretches, breaks or drops off the drive pulleys you will lose all movement.

The drive belt may be broken, or it may have slipped off a pulley.

Toro zero turn wont go forward or reverse

zero turn has 2 hydrostatic transmissions. Check drive belt, pulley tensioners for clog.
Remove clog with stick instead of your fingers if in the way of mechanism, belt or pulley wheels.
Check to be sure belt is taught and pulleys move. wd-40 is ok .
Do not get wd-40 onto pulley guides, or pulleys but only to tensioner mechanism and springs.
Paper towels are good spray blockers, wrap belt in paper towels if wd-40, do not use white lithium spray but only small amounts of grease when perform full breakdown and assembly maintenance on deck and drive.
The hydrostatic pumps might be drain&fill possible if they each have a vent hole and a drain plug next to vent hole somewhere. Clean them up with carb cleaner or use starter fluid if really nasty build up. Then check for hex tool drain plug and vent hole or vent cap over hole. Do not use vent hole for topping off hydro's

I have a craftsman 24 hp 54 " tractor with a automatic transmission and its about 8 years old. It was running and moving fine when i put it away for the winter and had no problems. When I took it out...

Hello, It is not likely the belt. The only thing you can do is do a purge and see if that helps.

Doing a purge is really easy:

  1. put transmission in the freewheel mode so you can push it, ensuring that it is on a flat surface
  2. start engine and run full throttle
  3. release clutch brake
  4. push the drive pedal or lever to the full forward position for a ten count
  5. push the drive pedal or lever to the full reverse position for a ten count
  6. repeat steps 4 & 5 three times
  7. depress & lock the clutch brake
  8. return the transmission to the normal mode
  9. drive tractor
If this fails to correct the problem you may need to replace the transaxle.

If you find this helpful please vote yes. Thank You!!

Tractor will not move with engine running Craftsman 917.287070

Make sure your drive belt, the topmost one, is in place and snug on the pulleys. Do not do this while the engine is running! If the engine is running fine and the belt is transferring power, then the problem lies with your transmission. You can find these used at mower bone yards and on ebay.
As most of these lawn tractors are made by just a few companies, you will find the same transmission is in many different mowers.

Install belt on toro mower model 70041

For removing/replacing the deck belt, the general method is:
  1. turn off engine, remove key and set parking brake
  2. disengage blade by putting blade engage lever into off (disengaged) position
  3. lower the cutting deck to the lowest position (closest to the ground)
  4. relieve the belt tension (depending on the model, use a 3/8 inch ratchet set to tighten in the square hole of the idler bracket)
  5. remove and replace the belt
NOTE: it's not necessary to completely remove the cutting deck.

Useful diagrams for removing the cutting deck, http://216.213.143.2/ProAuthor/ManProc.cfm?ManualID=425&ProcID=14794

For deck belt diagrams, http://216.213.143.2/ProAuthor/ManProc.cfm?ManualID=425&ProcID=14796

If the transmission drive belt needs to be replaced, several components must be removed and special tools (i.e. air/impact wrench) used in order to change the tractor's transmission drive belt. See an Authorized Toro Service Dealer to have your drive belt replaced.
