1 year old Whirlpool refrigerator not keeping food cold

The auto defrost is not working in the freezer, and frost is building up on the things stored in there. The food in the refrigerator section is cool, but not cold, and things are going bad before they should. I made sure that nothing was impeding the air flow out of the vents and it was better for a day or two, but it's back to its old tricks.

You are going to have to completely defrost the freezer and that includes removing the rear panel inside and clearing the coils. You will also have to determine what component in the defrost circuit is bad and replace. I would also look for a air leak around the gaskets as frost is a sign of warm air infiltration.

your sure the defrost cycle works? sounds to me its not. you need to remove the freezer back and check the defrost components. or put it in the defrost cycle and see if it is working. to get that much frost as you describe the dor would have to be left open. also check all door seals. let me know what you find and we can go from there

SOURCE: Miela fridge freezer freezes food in the fridge

Most likely reason is fridge evaporator sensor faulty. The sensor is screwed to the back wall of the fridge behind bracket next to light and has a green band near the end . The sensor come as a repair kit (part no. 7323301). Just follow instructions in the packet. It is quite straight forward

FREEZER NOT FREEZING PROPERLY

There could be a large list of things that cause the freezer to warm up from the temperature it was before. The most likely reason is you probably have a defrost problem. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control are all things that may have failed. If your model is not a frost free let me know. Look inside freezer for a layer of frost building on the rear wall. If your refrigerator is not defrosting it will be a short time before the fresh food compartment begins to warm. To extend the time your refrigerator and freezer can keep food safe defrost by placing a bucket of hot water inside the freezer and close the door. Please place food from freezer and fresh food compartment into another refrigerator or cold storage area. By keeping doors shut as much as possible the refrigerator and freezer will last up to a week this way before defrosting again, Sea Breeze

Fridge is cold, freezer is not

Please look into the freezer for frost build-up on the rear wall. If you are having a defrost problem it may limit the freezer temperature and still be cold enough for the fresh food section to remain at safe temperatures but not for long before freezer and fresh food section warms because frost blocks airflow and the evaporator is unable to keep everything cold because of frost build-up. I don't have your model number so I will list the parts that may need to be replaced. The defrost control=> 12002754 Frost Kit, defrost thermostat and 67002493 Defrost Heater Assembly

For testing of the defrost thermosat and defrost heater refer to the same page as the parts, If these parts are good the the 12002754 Frost Kit, could be defective. The 12002754 Frost Kit,
can be found in the control panel inside the fresh food compartment. Let me know if you have questions and also if you are not having a defrost problem, Thanks Sea Breeze

Whirpool side by side freezer working but fridge not

Hi emmaubiera86,

The issue with the freezer working but the fridge is not is usually the result of a defrost problem. The first thing to check in this case is the freezer area. Look at the back panel inside the freezer. If you notice frost covering the back panel, you have defrost problem. One of the things that happens during this defrost problem is Air cannot circulate from the freezer(where the cold happens basically) to the fresh food section. The coils inside the freezer are the only part inside the whole refrigerator that "get cold". They need to stay free from excess frost build up so that air can pass through the coils and reach the fridge section of your machine.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Amana energy saver not keeping fridge section cool enough. HELP!

if there is frost build up on rear wall of freezer section the unit is not going through defrost cycle which builds up frost on evaporator and restricts cold air flow to the fresh food section. one of three things are bad. defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer. if no frost on rear wall you might be low of freon.

My refrigerator is not keeping my food cold or frozen!!

Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt.

Evaporator coils Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets.

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited.

Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system:

  • The defrost timer

  • The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)

  • The defrost heater

If it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level or the compressor. You may need to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician to further diagnose the problem

Whirlpool fridge with top freezer.( no ice maker )

check if you have frost build up at the back side of the freezer section.

if you do, then it is a defrosting problem.

you could have a problem with the defrost timer, the defrost heater , or the bi-metal.

if there is no frost accumulation, that would be something more and you have to elaborate on what you observe with the unit to help me further troubleshoot your unit.

tnx 4 using fixya,
