Bill, if it is a universal remote try reprogramming it, if not a universal remote probably defective and time to get a new remote.

did you try to pull the backup batt for 1 minuth and put back it should help the backup battary is when you open the battary cover you should see a srew open it and take ou the battary out for a minuth and put back
Take off the battery, open the back of your remote, lift the circuit board, clean the green painted part with cotton balls slightly damp with rubbing alcohol as well as the black thingy behind your remote pad, let it dry put it back together, replace with a new battery and try if it works.
With the engine running are you getting any voltage off the alternator? check with a multimeter. Check voltage at battery while running should be 13 volts or more.
First make sure the terminal and posts are clean and greased.
Then make sure the alternator belt is tight.
The type of battery makes no difference as long as it fits.
What matters is whether or not the alternator is putting out 13.5 volts or higher, in order to keep the battery at 12.5 volts. Put a voltmeter on the battery and rev the engine.
Have both keys to hand. Rapidily flick the ignition to position 1 four times until you hear a chime then press the unlock key on both remotes. A chime should be heard each both times when you press the buttons
