My side-by-side developed a CHEMICAL SMELL a few days ago. My refrigerator and freezer are very clean. There is absolutely NO spills, open containers, or old food. I clean it regularly and do NOT use harsh chemically cleansers. The chemical smell began very subtle, and was coming from INSIDE the refrigerator and freezer, whenever we opened the door. But now I'm noticing it anytime I go into the kitchen and intensely everytime it's opened. Everything is running fine and is about 5 years old, NO water leaks, or noises, JUST THIS SMELL. We are NOT using the ice because it TASTE and SMELLS like chemical. Please help, I do NOT want to MASK or ABSORB the odor, but fix it. Afraid it's contaminating or food on the VERGE OF TOSSING IT.
You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!
Mine is a whirlpool sidebyside, not a kenmore. But I have the same problems, bad odor coming from the freezer and fridge side, ice cubes, once melted smells bad.Fridge is still working and freezing, but the smell is unbearable when u open the freezer or fridge. Can only smell the odor when either door is opened. I am thinking it is a freon leak somewhere, because why would the frozen ice cube melted water have the smell so strong? Is my fridge ready to go on the blink? Have had it for about 12 yrs.

I have a Kenmore Elite that is only 4 years old. It’s starting to not keep things cold and when I moved it out a smell was so strong it went in my mouth and stayed on my fingers. Idk what it was but I’m wondering if that is what it is.
