The printer works fine on regular paper and labels, but it smudges when printing envelopes. Maintenance says everything is fine. Suggestions?
On my MP780, be careful to select the appropriate paper type; I was getting black smudges on the left side of my envelopes until I explicitly set that my paper type was "envelope" from "plain paper".
Another idea is to adjust the "ink drying wait time" to a higher level.
According to the manual, you should set the Media Type to "[Envelope]" for envelopes. I was getting smearing from side to side by the print head with "Plain Paper", but the smearing completely stopped with the "Envelope" setting.
The Media Type combo box is on the "Main" tab on the "Printing Preferences" dialog. You can get the "Printing Preferences" dialog from the printing preferences button on the Print dialog of your favorite application. You can also set the overall printing preferences from the Printer Properties dialog available by right clicking on the printer in the "Printers" application in Control Panel.
I am using Stamps.com. There is no "Printing Preferences" button that I can find in Stamps.com, but you can still set the overall printing preferences from the control panel, as noted above, to make "Envelope" the default for that printer.
In my testing, it takes 31 seconds to print an envelope from Stamps.com to that printer, using the Auto Sheet Feeder. The manual says you can put 10 envelopes into that feeder. The printed side goes facing up, and the top of the envelope to the left. The return address end of the envelope comes out first.
From Endicia.com's DAZzle program, it prints the envelope, including return address, delivery address, and postage, in generally 17 seconds (although sometimes the printer goes through some sort of reset process with various clicking, that can add up to 20 seconds - that is also true with the Stamps.com program)
With Endicia, although I was printing on #10 envelopes, the "Guide Me" feature in printer setup picked B5 paper size, which works great.
