If your charge indicator light is not lighting, you may be right. The most common failure is the connector socket where the cord attaches to the computer. Inspect for cracks, looseness, etc. Try wiggling and rotating the connector with it plugged in and look for charge light indication. Move slowly as the indicator light is often slow to respond.
If you can get it to flicker when you hold it "just right", you may need to look at getting it repaired. I have sent away several laptops to a shop that specializes in this repair.
An intermediate step would be to find a computer repair location (our firedog at Circuit City used to be equipped before they closed) who has either an assortment of power adapters or a universal power adapter. They can try to power it up that way to determine if it's your charger.

just do a simple test.
plug your charger in AC mains, at the jack end, insert a wire and then try to make instant contact with the jacket of the jack. you will see a brief spark. If spark is there, it means your adapter is good. rest you know that if charger is ok and still laptop is not working it means that there is something wrong with the power section inside the laptop. Even with a bad battary, if adapter is good, laptop will work, provided power section of the laptop should be ok.
cheers
Power drain would be a better solution in this case.
1.first shut down the comp
2.unplug the charger
3. remove the battery
and after press and hold the power button for 60 seconds without any charger and the battery. After the 60 seconds replug the battery and the charger and turn the computer .
If possible could you check output voltage of the charger with a multimeter? If you can get output voltage, then might be something wrong with laptop battery charging circuit. Contact Laptop Repairing Engineer.
