What does a float valve look like

A float valve is a valve attached to a float on an arm normally that when the level reaches a set level the pressure on the float closes off the valve and stops more water coming in. IN some instances where space is limited the float is around the inlet pipe and again when the level reaches a preset level the float stops the incoming water by turning off the valve Commonly found in the cistern of the toilet as both units depending on the age of the system.

Gas is runnung out the over flow tube and bike wont start

Either something is stuck in the float bowl valve or similar. You will need to shut off of the gas, drop the float bowl, check that the float move and closes the valve. If everything looks good and the valve actually closes, then there is a chance the float is fuel logged, or soaked with fuel. It won't float then. Replace the float, clean and/or replace the valve, clean the seat and check for scoring. New gasket on the float bowl, tighten it up, and you should be set.

Gas leak out or the carburetor

Thiis usually caused by a failure of either the float valve or the float itself.

Bad float needle valve: If some dirt or other particle gets stuck on the needle valve or seat, the valve will not be able to completely close and fuel will continue to flow into the bowl and eventually overflow. A new needle valve and seat are < $5.00 on-line.

Bad float: If the circular float gets a hole in it, fuel will get inside and the "float" will get heavy and no longer float on top of the fuel in the bowl. Because it doesn't float it will not rise high enough to push the needle up into the seat and keep extra fuel from entering the bowl. A new circular float is < $10 on-line.

Problem with starting my bike

Sticking floats or worn float valve needles or incorrect float height, tap float bowls to see it overflow stops (sticky float), remove and clean float bowls and fuel inlet passage with carb cleaner and compressed air, check float valve for wear to the rubber tip. Reset float height by slightly bending the metal tab on the float to adjust the closing height of the valve measure from the carb bowl mating surface to the top of the float when fitted then re adjust 1mm at a time higher untill fuel doesnt over flow.

Gas in the crankcase

If there is gas in the oil the float valve is being held open either by a worn float valve and seat or dirt in the fuel line and possibly a hole in the float. You will have to remove the carburetor from the machine and disassemble the carburetor. Remove the float bowl from the carburetor and check for dirt in the bowl. Remove the float pin the remove the float and float valve. Inspect the float valve for wear it should be smooth all around the tip. Shake the float to see if there is fuel inside the float if so replace the float. with the fuel line off of the carburetor allow some fuel to flow into a clean container and allow any dirt in the fuel to escape.

A line coming off the bottom of the carb is leaking when the gas is turned on. how do i stop it?

It would appear that the float is not shutting off fuel flow when the bowl is full--take off the bowl, remove the float and needle valve. Turn on the fuel for a moment to wash out the needle seat, clean the needle tip and reinstall the parts you took off. If the float is brass, shake it to listen for fuel inside the float. If there is, replace it. Plastic floats don't have this problem. Hope this helps!

When i park my 78 xs 650 with the kickstand for a bit, when i lean it back up level gas comes out of the carb and down through the air cleaner box. Whats this?

The float level is too high or the float valve is being hung open by dirt or fuel varnish. First, turn the petcock to the 'off' position and then drain the gasoline from each float bowl by loosening the drain screw on the bottom. Close the drain screws and turn the petcock back on. Check to see if the problem is still there.
If so, then the float bowls will have to be removed and the float valves cleaned and inspected for wear. Also, take each float and shake it while listening for any fuel that may have leaked inside. Any float that has gasoline in it must be replaced. Upon reinstalling the float valves, check to see that the arms on the float are parallel to the float bowl gasket surface just as the float contacts the float valve. This is the correct float level. Adjust the bendable little metal tang on the float to achieve the correct float level.
