Assume you are checking the max RPM when not operating the boat? If so, might have a second tach to check the gauge is okay. Naturally, if you checked RPMs underway it would probably be a dented prop. Pete

SOURCE: I have a crusader 350xl marine engine that will

For one thing the faster you idle the worst it is for the outdrive. Without changing the throttle adjustments you can change the idle characteristics. If this is a carbureted engine you will need a vacuum gauge and a place to connect it on the engine. With the vacuum gauge connected turn the air mixture screws until the rpm rises to a peak and then starts to fall favoring lean. Balance both screws if there are more than one. You may have solved your problem already. If you want to idle higher than specs disconnect the throttle cable and set the throttle stop screw to open the carb more. Follow by adjusting the throttle cable to push the throttle closed so there is tension to return to base idle without slop.

SOURCE: husky 372xp - can't adjust high setting on carb to

They use a proprietary "socket" so you can't adjust it. Using a Dremel cutoff tool grind a thin slot on the head and use a screwdriver. Also, remember that technically, the saw should be under load when setting the high setting. You'll have to go for: 1) best performance 2) turn it out 1/8 turn to give it a little more fuel.

It seems your fuel pump fails at idle speed. I would first ensure that fuel pump is well fitted, no leaks, and good diaphragm condition.

Sputtering at 5000 rpm

AT 5000 RPM? What is the redline on the XT 600? I had a XT 500 Do not remember my year exactly, I was thinking the redline was close to 5000 RPM and if that is the case you could be possibly hitting a REV limiter or floating the valves.
Have you adjusted or checked the Valve clearance lately along with the Timing chain tensioner to be sure all are within adjustment specs?
The example you gave where it does it in 2nd gear, 3rd gear, I am sure it would do it in any gear as it sounds exactly as if teh engine is running up against a rev limiter or mechanical limits of teh valve train.

2000 650 v star. rear cylinder doesn't catch and run until front reaches 1500 or so rpm. took to dealer, and after arm and 2 legs, still doesn't run well. replaced plugs (twice). haven't...

So check the compression. The valves could be set wrong or are not sealing well. You didn't mention any smoking so the piston rings should be okay. The most likely cause of the problem is a pin hole in the carb diaphragm or a carb needing to be cleaned. Go ahead and drain the float bowl then remove it. Now clean the carb with spray carb cleaner. With a bit of luck the cleaning alone will fix the problem. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

350 chevy with elebrook carb will not idle below 2500 can you help? just rebuilt this carb. every thing went good all settings done by the book. very clean inside all jets cleaned or replaced. re check...

Manually operate the choke mechanism and watch to make sure it fully releases. Quite often mistakes can occur when putting the pieces back together and it won't fully release off fast idle. Are you absolutely positive that you didn't forget an o- ring or ball when you put the carb back together? Is there any chance there is a gasket upside down? Could the power valve be in wrong? These types of things could create that problem, there is too much gas going through your idle circuit. What happens when you turn in the idle screws? Are you sure about the timing? I don't have specs for a 1/2 ton but all the specs in my Chilton give me 6 degrees in California and 8 degrees everywhere else. These numbers cover all models of cars for a 1978 350. Hope this helps.

How to tune up a carburator

the 2 air screws on front need to be adjusted with it running for best results but start at 1 and a half turns out on ea side then start the engine and turn the screws out till you hit maximum rpm and repeat on other side when the engin is at the max rpm there set, done while on idle .2 bbl / 4 bbl / ? they both will have a needle and seat to regulate the fuel coming in make sure there clean and functioning , make sure the float floats in gas and doesnt sink . make sure the main metering jets are operating and cleaned out good and not sticking either .some carbs have a paper filter in front you need a big wrench to undo ,change the filter or discard if theres a good 1 in the line already.
